ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- Fifth-year senior third baseman Taylor Bump used a two-run triple in the seventh inning to propel the No. 23-ranked University of Michigan softball team to a 4-3 walk-off win over rival Ohio State on Saturday (April 23) in front of 2,366 fans at the Wilpon Complex, home of Alumni Field.
Michigan was forced to rally in the seventh after sacrificing a one-run lead in the top of the inning. Senior first baseman Lexie Blair, in her first start since suffering an injury three weeks ago, led off the home half with a single just fair down the first-base line, and after sacrifice bunt and a Buckeye pitching change, senior catcher Hannah Carson followed with a second-pitch single to left to put runners on the corners with one out.
Bump drove a liner high off the wall in left-center, and it bounced hard back into the gap to allow both runners to race home. The Wolverine senior slid in safely for the second triple of her collegiate career and her second late game-winning RBI in five games.
Blair and Carson also highlighted the Wolverine offense with two hits apiece.
After giving up the initial lead in the second inning, Michigan surged ahead in the fifth, drawing three straight walks to load the bases for Blair, who skipped an RBI single through the right side to even the score. Graduate student second baseman Melina Livingston then aired a sacrifice fly to right field for the go-ahead run.
Ohio State answered with a two-run, two-out double to left-center in the top of the seventh to retake the lead. Graduate student LHP Meghan Beaubien faced the first two batters of the inning, allowing a leadoff single and a sac bunt, and re-entered after the Buckeye go-ahead double to force a first-pitch groundout to end the inning.
Beaubien (8-4) earned all but one out in the contest, giving up two runs on eight hits and no walks while striking out one Buckeye batter in 6.2 innings.
Michigan (28-14, 8-7 Big Ten) will wrap up the weekend series against Ohio State with a noon rubber match at Alumni Field. The game will be broadcast live on ESPN2.
