ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan women's gymnastics team held its annual banquet Sunday (May 1) to celebrate the 2022 season.
The team gathered together to look back at a season in which the Wolverines won their 26th Big Ten Championship as well as a B1G regular-season title, a regional title and broke both the program vault (49.875) and floor (49.750) records.
Seniors Natalie Wojcik and Abby Heiskell along with junior Sierra Brooks were named the team's most valuable performers. It is the fourth for Wojcik, the third for Brooks and the first for Heiskell.
Wojcik was the 2022 AAI Award winner, just the third in Michigan women's gymnastics history, as she finished the season with two WCGA All-American nods and was the individual regional champion on the uneven bars. The Douglasville, Pa. native earned four WCGA Regular Season All-American honors and was named first-team All-Big Ten for the fourth time in her career. The senior all-arounder broke the Michigan record with 14 Big Ten Gymnast of the Week honors and was the individual Big Ten Champion on balance beam. Finally, Wojcik recorded her 100th career routine of 9.900 or better and won 20 individual event and all-around titles in 2022.
Brooks was both the Regional Gymnast of the Year and the Big Ten Gymnast of the Year after her impressive junior campaign in which she won 14 event titles and had two perfect 10.0s on vault. The Plainfield, Ill. native captured her third first-team All-Big Ten nod and was the individual champion on the vault with a perfect score. Brooks earned WCGA First Team All-America honors on both vault and uneven bars, while also earning three WCGA Regular Season All-American nods in the all-around, vault and floor exercise.
Heiskell continued to be a huge part of Michigan's all-around core as she was a two-time WCGA All-America honoree and was the individual Big Ten all-around, uneven bars and floor champion. In her senior season, Heiskell won eight individual event and all-around titles, including scoring her first career 10.0 on vault at Rutgers. Heiskell notched two second-team WCGA Regular Season All-America nods and captured first team All-Big Ten honors for the second time.
Junior Gabby Wilson won two teams awards as she was the unsung hero and also earned the Scholar-Athlete Award for the second straight season. Wilson anchored the floor lineup all season with two perfect scores and also had a 10.0 on vault at NCAA Regionals. The Ypsilanti, Mich. native was a two-time WCGA Regular Season All-America honoree and won nine titles this season, seven of which came on floor. Wilson retained her crown as the NCAA Regional floor champion and was a two-time Big Ten Specialist of the Week.
Sophomore Naomi Morrison also took home a pair of team awards as she earned the Coaches Award for the second straight season and also earned the Chip Hills Spirit Award. Morrison entered the lineup as an all-arounder in her sophomore season and was a two-time WCGA Regular Season All-America honoree as well as a first-team All-Big Ten honoree and won two titles in 2022. The Chandler, Ariz. native set career highs on all four events, including posting four scores of 9.975 on vault and earning a 9.975 on floor.
Sophomore Reyna Guggino and Jenna Mulligan were co-Most Improved Gymnasts in the 2022 season as Guggino was in the vault lineup in every meet, while also cracking the lineup on beam and floor on multiple occasions. Mulligan entered the lineup on both vault and floor this season, including an appearance in the NCAA Regional Finals. Guggino made NCAA history becoming just the second gymnast to ever lead off a rotation with a 10.0 as she earned the perfect score on vault at Rutgers and was named second-team All-Big Ten.
Senior Abby Brenner earned the Specialist Award as she competed on uneven bars in every meet this past season, while also competing on floor in all but two meets and on vault three different times. Brenner started the season as the Big Ten Specialist of the Week, after winning the floor title against Arizona State and was named second-team All-Big Ten for her efforts in 2022.
Finally, Jacey Vore was named the Newcomer of the Year as she competed on both uneven bars and beam in her first season as a Wolverine. Vore entered the lineup for the first time on bars at Minnesota and earned a 9.900 and finished the season with five scores of 9.900 or better on the event.
