ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- With a 72 (+1) from junior Hailey Borja and senior Ashley Lau's second straight 73 (+2), the 18th-ranked University of Michigan women's golf team posted a 300 total Tuesday (May 10) and is fourth with a 593 36-hole total at the NCAA Ann Arbor Regional being played at the U-M Golf Course.
With the top four teams and top two individuals from a non-qualifying team moving onto the NCAA Finals in Scottsdale, Ariz, the Maize and Blue plays the final round with Washington (293-305/598) and Ohio State (305-304/609). The trio will tee off at 8 a.m. from the No. 1 tee.
After opening the regional with a 293 in windy conditions at U-M Golf Course in Monday's first round, the Michigan continued to play through the gusty conditions on its home course Tuesday. Borja, who was two-under through nine holes, highlighted the Wolverines' play throughout the front side. However, U-M managed only four birdies and U-M made the turn to the backside at six-over par.
Moving to the back-nine, Lau recorded four of the Wolverines' six birdies to card a second straight 73. Adding in Borja's 72 (+1), U-M tallied 300 to give Michigan a two-day tally of 593. With that total, Michigan holds a five-shot advantage over Washington for the final advancing spot.
After Monday's opening 73 (+2), Borja used 13 pars and two birdies on her final three holes to counter three bogeys and finish at 72 (+1), moving up five positions to end the day tied for eighth at 145. Playing her back-nine at three-over in Monday's first round, Lau adjusted with four birdies and closed two-under Tuesday and tied for 13th at 146.
Rounding out the U-M starting five, junior Mikaela Schulz is tied for 27th (74-76/150), sophomore Monet Chun is tied for 35th (73-79/152) and senior Sophia Trombetta is tied for 59th (83-79/162).
No. 8 Virginia used just the fifth sub-par women's team total (281, -3) on U-M's home course to move up three spots and take the regional lead with a 575 (294-281). No. 4 San Jose State's even-par 284 has them second at 578 (294-284), while No. 20 Arkansas is holding onto the third spot at 582 (291-291).
