ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- Former University of Michigan ice hockey player Kent Johnson has been named to Hockey Canada's National Team for the 2022 IIHF Men's World Championship. He is the fifth Wolverine to be selected to the rosters this year, as four others will play for Team USA.
The World Championship will be held May 13-29 in Tampere and Helsinki, Finland. The 16 teams, split into Groups A and B, will play a round-robin format in the preliminary round with the top four teams from each group advancing to the quarterfinals. Canada will be in Group A, and take on Germany in the first game of the tournament on May 13.
This marks Johnson's third national team roster selection this year, as he was also a member of the 2022 Olympic Team and the 2022 World Junior Team. At the World Junior Championship, he scored the team's first goal in the second game versus Austria before the tournament was cancelled. At the Olympics, Johnson appeared in every game and finished as a point-per-game player with one goal and four assists with a +4 rating in five games.
Johnson played in nine games with the Columbus Blue Jackets following Michigan's run to the Frozen Four this season. He had three points, two on the power-play, and was a +2.
Johnson played two seasons for Michigan, collecting 64 points on 17 goals and 47 assists in 58 games. He finished as a +41 as the Wolverines won the Big Ten Championship and advanced to the Frozen Four.
Forty-one Wolverines have played in the World Championship, including 33 for the United States, seven for Canada and one for Austria. Michigan players have brought home 16 medals (four gold, two silver and 10 bronze).
