ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- In conjunction with ESPN and the Big Ten and the ACC, the University of Michigan men's basketball team announced Friday (June 24) that the Wolverines will host the Virginia Cavaliers in the 2022 ACC/Big Ten Challenge on Tuesday, Nov. 29, at Crisler Center.
Entering its 24th year, the 14-game annual event will be played over a three-day period -- Monday through Wednesday, Nov. 28-30. All Challenge games will be televised on ESPN, ESPN2 or ESPNU with tip times and television designations to be assigned at a later date.
Michigan and Virginia have met one time in the challenge, Nov. 29, 2011. Despite 12 points from Zack Novak and 11 from Trey Burke, the Wolverines fell 70-58 in Charlottesville. Virginia was led by four double figure Cavaliers led by Mike Scott's double-double (18 points, 11 rebounds).
Overall, U-M is 2-2 against Virginia. The three other games started in 1951 in a neutral-site game in Pittsburgh as the Wolverines claimed a 66-52 victory (Dec. 28). The next game was 29 years later in a NIT quarterfinal matchup at University Hall, a 79-68 Cavaliers win. During U-M's 1989 national title run, the Maize and Blue defeated Virginia, 102-65, in Lexington, Ky. (March 25) to advance to the Final Four in Seattle.
Michigan has played in 20 of the 22 Challenge series and holds an 8-12 all-time record. The Wolverines hold a 5-4 record in challenge games played in Ann Arbor. The last home game was in 2018, when U-M hosted North Carolina (W, 84-67; Nov. 28). The Maize and Blue had a home game scheduled in 2020, but it was canceled due to COVID-19 protocols within the Wolfpack program. The Wolverines are 2-8 on the road and 1-0 at a neutral site. Michigan did not play in 2001 or 2002 series.
The ACC has claimed 13 of the 22 Commissioner's Cups, but the Big Ten won its ninth with an 7-5 series win last season. Overall, there have been three ties 2012 (6-6), 2013 (6-6) and 2018 (7-7). As the rules state, if the series ends in a tie, the Cup stays with the previous year's winner.
