ROSEMONT, Ill. -- University of Michigan seniors Drew Mattin (wrestling) and Lillian Mei (rowing) have been awarded the 2022 Big Ten postgraduate scholarships among the conference's recipients announced Thursday (June 30).
Two students competing in intercollegiate athletics from each of the 14 Big Ten institutions who plan to continue their education at a graduate degree program each were awarded a $7,500 scholarship, based primarily on academic achievements.
Drew Mattin (Delta, Ohio)
Mattin, who earned a bachelor's degree in biology, health and society and a master's in social work while at Michigan, will start at Ohio University's Heritage College of Osteopathic Medicine next fall. The son of an emergency room doctor, he has sights set on pursuing a similar path in emergency medicine.
Mattin was a three-time NCAA qualifier at 125 and 141 pounds and compiled a 70-40 record over his five-year collegiate career, including a 19-11 dual-meet mark and a 16-4 record this season while competing primarily at 133 pounds. He posted 17 pins in his career and 28 total bonus wins.
In the classroom, Mattin was a three-time Academic All-Big Ten honoree and was twice named a Big Ten Distinguished Scholar and to the NWCA All-Academic Team. Mattin also spearheaded many of the Wrestling Wolverines' community-service initiatives over his career, including regular visits to Michigan's C.S. Mott Children's Hospital.
Lillian Mei (San Ramon, Calif.)
Following her career as a Michigan rower and the completion of her undergraduate studies in mechanical engineering, Mei will remain in Ann Arbor as she pursues her master's degree in Mechanical Engineering (MSE) at U-M. Mei has been a leader and key contributor for the rowing program. She has been part of two Big Ten Championship-winning teams (2019, '21) and helped win gold medals with the first varsity four in both seasons.
As a junior in 2021, she competed on the sport's highest stage, helping the 1V4 place sixth in the NCAA Grand Final event, which led to a fourth-place team finish. She was the team's Sportsmanship Award recipient at the 2022 Big Ten Championships.
Mei is equally decorated for her academic accomplishments. In addition to three Academic All-Big Ten honors, she has twice been a Collegiate Rowing Coaches' Association Scholar-Athlete and was a Big Ten Distinguished Scholar in 2020.
Each Big Ten institution developed its own on-campus selection process when awarding the scholarship. Students must have maintained at least a 3.2 grade-point average, demonstrated leadership qualities, served as an excellent role model and intended to continue their academic work beyond their baccalaureate degree at a graduate degree program.
The scholarship will be used to pay expenses of the student's postgraduate education to include such related activities as research and teaching, as well as other expenses such as tuition, fees, room and board, required course-related supplies and books. In order to retain the scholarship, the recipient must be accepted into a full-time graduate degree program within three years from the fall semester after selection.
