DURHAM, N.C. -- The University of Michigan men's soccer team fell 3-0 to No. 17-ranked Duke on Thursday night (Sept. 1) at Koskinen Stadium in its first road match of the 2022 season.
Freshman Nicholas Kaloukian came in as a reserve in the second half and tallied a team-best four shots, two of which were on goal, while freshman Oliver Martin also had a shot on goal in the match. In goal, sophomore Hayden Evans made six saves in his third start of the season.
Michigan (1-2-0) had the first opportunity of the match as Inaki Rodriguez fed Bryce Blevins inside the 18-yard box, but Blevins' shot sailed just wide of the left goal post to keep the match scoreless just three minutes in. Duke (3-0-0) took a 1-0 lead in the 31st minute when a loop pass from the left side of the pitch found the head of a Blue Devil just inches in front of the net and he headed it down and in past Evans.
U-M tallied two shots in the first half as it headed into the halftime break trailing 1-0.
Kevin Buca looked to set up the game-tying goal three minutes into the start of the second half when he passed the ball to Kaloukian inside the 18-yard box. Kaloukian took one touch and fired it at the net, but it was picked up by the Duke keeper, and Michigan continued to trail 1-0.
Duke extended its lead to 2-0 on a penalty kick and used a one-time shot in the 68th minute to go up 3-0 over the Wolverines.
Kaloukian continued to hustle in the second half, getting in two more shots, but the Wolverines were unable to put any shots into the back of the net and took the road loss.
The Wolverines will return to U-M Soccer Stadium on Monday (Sept. 5) when they host Bowling Green at 2 p.m. on B1G+.
