ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The No. 4-ranked University of Michigan football team rolled up 588 yards of total offense in an all-around dominant display against Hawai'i on Saturday (Sept. 10). In front of a game-night crowd of 110,012 at Michigan Stadium, the Wolverines routed the Rainbow Warriors 56-10 to improve to 2-0 on the campaign.
Quarterback J.J. McCarthy completed 92 percent (11-of-12) of his passes for 229 yards and three touchdowns to lead the Michigan offense, while Hawai'i native Roman Wilson provided an offensive punch to the tune of two touchdowns, one receiving and one rushing, and 63 all-purpose yards.
The Wolverine's rushing game, led by Blake Corum's 88 yards, provided the offensive punch with 320 yards and five touchdowns. Joining Corum and Wilson with touchdowns were CJ Stokes, Donovan Edwards and Isaiah Gash. The TDs were the first of Stokes and Gash's careers.
Michigan's aerial attack was similarly effective, finishing with 268 yards and three scores. Ronnie Bell led all receivers with six receptions for 74 yards and added his first touchdown catch of the season in the second quarter. Cornelius Johnson was the only other Wolverine with more than one catch in the game, hauling in two for 71 yards, including a 17-yard touchdown catch.
After the U-M defense forced a three-and-out to start the game, the Wolverines scored on their second play from scrimmage as McCarthy connected with Wilson for a 66-yard strike. Michigan turned its next two offensive possessions into touchdowns as well, and the rout was on.
The Wolverines went into the locker room at half leading 42-0 and with a 410-47 advantage in total yards. The defense was stifling all game, as 18 of the Maize and Blue recorded multiple tackles, with R.J. Moten and Caden Kolesar leading the way with four apiece. Senior edge rusher Mike Morris recorded the first sack of his career in the second quarter, and Braiden McGregor recorded the team's other tackle for loss.
In total, Michigan outgained Hawai'i 588 to 253 in the contest and had a 23-13 advantage in first downs. The Wolverines saw third down just six times in the game, while the Rainbow Warriors went just 7-of-19 when facing third down. U-M averaged 10.7 yards per offensive play and held Hawai'i to just 3.7.
U-M will continue its non-conference home schedule with a matchup against Connecticut next Saturday (Sept. 17). Kickoff is scheduled for noon on ABC.
