LAKE ELMO, Minn. -- Led by junior Monet Chun's top-10 individual finish, the 20th-ranked University of Michigan women's golf team opened its season with a ninth-place showing Wednesday (Sept. 14) with an 880 total at the ANNIKA Intercollegiate played at the Royal Golf Club.
The Wolverines used an opening-round 70 (-2) from senior Mikaela Schulz and an even-par 72 from Chun to etch an even 288 team total on Monday's board, putting the Maize and Blue in a tie for second. A six-birdie 68 (-4) from Chun as well as a 71 (-1) from graduate student Ashley Lau highlighted U-M's second round. With those tallies, Michigan repeated its opening 288 tally, but it saw the Wolverines drop two spots to a tie for fourth after 36 holes.
"It was a tremendous opportunity to compete in one of the premier collegiate events in the nation," said U-M head coach Jan Dowling. "This team earned the invitation and we embraced it for sure. We had two solid days, and put ourselves into contention. Our final round wasn't our best, but we will continue to learn and know we can compete with the best with our A and B games."
A slow start to the final round saw the Wolverines finish with a 304 team total and fall to ninth with an 880 total. Senior Hailey Borja found herself five-over after her first six holes. However, she rallied playing three-under over her next 12 holes. With eight pars and four birdies, she rebounded with a 73 (+1). Chun had eight pars and a birdie on her opening nine holes before three bogeys and a double yielded a 75.
With her seventh career top-10 finish, Chun paced U-M in the season opener with her fourth career sub-par 54-hole total at 215 (-1). Her second-round 68 (-4) was her 11th career sub-par round, fourth sub-70 and second-lowest round of her career. Borja finished tied for 29th with her 221 total after bookending rounds of 73 (+1) around her second-round 75. Schulz rounded out U-M's top three, tying for 35th at 222 (70-74-78).
"Monet took advantage of some very solid ball striking and had a very nice top 10," said Dowling. "She really doesn't ever over or under value any one tournament, and was ready for this great opportunity. What a nice way to start her fall campaign."
The Maize and Blue will return to Ann Arbor and have a quick turnaround, heading to Knoxville, Tenn., for Tennessee's Mercedes Benz Collegiate, Monday and Tuesday (Sept. 19-20) at the Cherokee Country Club.
