COLLEGE PARK, Md. -- The University of Michigan women's soccer team fell by a 1-0 score to the Maryland Terrapins in the Big Ten Conference opener for both sides on Friday night (Sept. 16) at Maryland's Ludwig Field.
Michigan (5-3-1, 0-1-0 B1G) had its first chance of the match in the 13th minute, as senior Hannah Blake, who was returning to the lineup for the first time since the Butler match (Aug. 21), ripped a blistering effort from 25 yards out. However, the attempt from the top center was tipped narrowly out by Maryland goalkeeper Madeline Smith.
Nine minutes later, senior Lily Farkas' right-footed bender was stopped in traffic. Junior Sarah Bridenstine played a service in two minutes later from the right flank that was intended to be a cross in the direction of Sammi Woods, but the ball hit off the left post and kicked out toward the Maryland back line.
The Wolverines controlled the shot category in the first half, 4-3, with all-four attempts coming on frame. Michigan also heavily controlled the run of play in the opening half.
Just four minutes into the second half, junior Kacey Lawrence played an inch-perfect service to senior Dani Wolfe at the top of the six. Wolfe's header was undeterred but squeaked wide left in U-M's best chance at that juncture.

Graduate student Izzy Nino came up with a key stop in the 54th minute. Terrapin attacker Alina Stahl had her first shot of the night from 20-yards out top center, but Nino punched the attempt over the bar to preserve the score line.
Maryland (2-5-1, 1-0-0 B1G) controlled the first 25 minutes of the second half and found its reward in the 70th minute off a header by Mikayla Dayes. The service on the marker came from Julianna Lynch on the left flank and was headed home eight yards out top center as the Terrapins took the lead with the eventual match winner.
Trailing 1-0, Lawrence appeared to equalize eight minutes later, but a questionable offsides call resulted in the goal being overturned. In the 85th, U-M had an appeal for a penalty denied as Wolfe was seemingly fouled inside the box, but it went unanswered.
Time eventually ran out on the Wolverine comeback attempt as U-M fell to 0-1 in Big Ten play and 4-1 in road matches on the campaign. The Terrapins outshot U-M 7-5 in the second half and ended with a 10-9 margin in the category overall.
Michigan played without the services of graduate student center back Margot Ridgeway, who was issued a red card suspension in U-M's previous match against Toledo.
U-M's Big Ten home slate commences on Thursday (Sept. 22), as the Wolverines host Ohio State at 7 p.m. from U-M Soccer Stadium.
