KNOXVILLE, Tenn. -- With a career-low 207 (-6), senior Hailey Borja tied for seventh individually and led a trio of top 25 Wolverines, pacing the University of Michigan women's golf team to an 858 54-hole total Tuesday (Sept 20), good for a tie for sixth at the Mercedes-Benz Collegiate played at the Cherokee Country Club.
"Overall, our team gained some great experience," said U-M head coach Jan Dowling. "It was a different feeling playing without Ashley (Lau), but our team prepared the same and we really had our veterans step up. It was another great building block for our team and future of our program."
As Borja carded the first of her two career-low-tying 68s (-3), senior Mikaela Schulz joined her in the first round, posting a 68 (-3) of her own. Junior Monet Chun chipped in a 70 (-1), as the Maize and Blue opened its 36-hole day with a 281 (-3) team total. Heading into the day's second 18, all three Wolverines etched even-par 71s on the board as U-M posted a 287 total to sit tied for sixth at even-par 568 36-hole total.
With a clean sheet of 15 pars and three of her nine total birdies, Borja fired her second 68 (-3) to finish with a career-low 207 (-6) total to pace U-M to a final round a 290 and 858 event total. With that tally, the Wolverines tied for sixth along with host Tennessee and Virginia Tech.
Borja's 207 (68-71-68) set a new career-best 54-hole total by three shots and helped her to her 11th career top-10 finish.
"I played really well," said Borja. "My hitting was a lot better than last week and that is what really helped me. I felt very confident in my putting this week and that's where my birdies really came from. I definitely was trying to stay patient this whole tournament, especially on the 36-hole day. It paid off."
"Hailey had a great week, and scored very well," said Dowling. "She plodded her way around the course and took advantage of par 5s with great strategy and short game. She really led our team with some fabulous consistency."
Schulz and Chun followed with top-25 finishes. With her even-par 213 (67-71-74) Schulz recorded her first top 20 of the season, tying for 18th. Chun, who led U-M in the season opener last week, closed at 214 (70-71-73, +1) to help her tie for 21st. Making her collegiate debut and first career start, freshman Sydney Sung posted a 233 total (81-75-77), while twin sister Lauren Sung made her debut as an individual, tying for 44th at 221 (71-75-75).
The Wolverines return to Ann Arbor for a couple of weeks or prep work before heading to Highland Park, Ill., to play in Northwestern's Windy City Classic at the Exmoor Country Club, Monday and Tuesday, Oct. 3-4.
