Dickinson Drops Another Double-Double, but U-M Comes Up Short at Maryland

COLLEGE PARK, Md. -- Despite Hunter Dickinson's third straight double-double (19 points, 10 rebounds), the University of Michigan men's basketball team lost to Maryland 64-58 on Thursday night (Jan. 19) at the Xfinity Center.
Leaders and Best
Dickinson paced the Wolverines with 19 points and added 10 rebounds, while Terrance Williams II set a career high with 13 rebounds and added nine points. Jett Howard scored 13 points behind three triples.
Turning Point
After tying Maryland at 44 with 11 minutes to play in the second half, Michigan was outscored 15-5 over a six-minute stretch, creating a 10-point deficit that the Wolverines could not overcome.
First Half
Michigan (10-8, 4-3 Big Ten) struggled out of the gate, missing five straight field goals and falling behind 7-2 before an 8-0 run by Maryland (12-6, 3-4 Big Ten) left U-M trailing by 11 just before the 10-minute mark.
The Michigan offense started to get into a groove, making four straight field goals highlighted by a three-pointer from Howard, who knocked down two more triples before the four-minute mark, bringing the Wolverines back within seven, 30-23.
U-M stepped up defensively to close the half and did not allow a Maryland field goal for the final 3:46 before the break, while Dickinson made two threes to cut the deficit to a mere two points, 34-23, at halftime.
Second Half
After falling behind by six, Michigan went on an 8-2 run and tied the game 42 after a fast-break layup from Williams. Tarris Reed Jr. made a layup to even the score again at 44, but Maryland built a lead off a 7-0 run over the next two minutes to take a 51-44 advantage.
Joey Baker ended the run with a layup and three-pointer, but Maryland scored six more unanswered points to claim a 59-49 lead with 4:30 left in regulation. The Wolverines attempted to claw back, pulling within four as Dickinson scored seven points in the final four minutes. However, Michigan could not get its late three-point attempts to fall, and U-M took the 64-58 loss.
What's Next
Michigan will return to Crisler Center to host Minnesota on Sunday (Jan. 22) at 1 p.m. The game will be broadcast live on Big Ten Network.
Notes
• Dickinson now has three career double-doubles against Maryland, shooting 43-for-57 (75.4 percent) from the field against the Terrapins.
• Dickinson made a season-high three three-pointers. He is shooting 41.7 percent (10-for-24) from beyond the arc this season.
• With seven assists, Dug McDaniel fell one shy of his career high. The freshman has 27 assists over his last five games (5.4 per game).
• After sinking three triples, Jett Howard has made at least two three-pointers in 16 of 18 career games. Howard ranks second in the Big Ten with 50 threes on the season.
