ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- Hunter Dickinson scored 23 points -- 15 coming in the second half -- and collected nine rebounds as the University of Michigan men's basketball team defeated Minnesota 60-54 on Sunday afternoon (Jan. 22) at Crisler Center.
Leaders and Best
Dickinson led the Wolverines with 23 points and nine rebounds, going nine-for-nine from the free throw line. Dug McDaniel added 10 points and eight rebounds, while Kobe Bufkin scored 12.
First Half
Minnesota (7-11, 1-7 Big Ten) took an early lead behind an 8-0 run in the first two minutes. Michigan (11-8, 5-3 Big Ten) opened the game ice cold from the field, making one of its first 10 field-goal attempts and fell behind 14-4.
Will Tschetter's layup sparked an 8-0 Michigan run during a seven-minute Minnesota scoring drought. After the run pulled U-M within two points, both teams came up empty from the field for more than three minutes.
Minnesota's Ta'lon Cooper finally got a layup to fall with just under two minutes remaining, giving the Gophers a five-point lead, but the Wolverines answered with a three by McDaniel and a hook shot from Dickinson to even the score at 23 at halftime.
Second Half
Michigan used an 8-0 run to build a five-point lead early in the second half, however the advantage was quickly erased after Minnesota made its next three field goals, tying the game at 33 with just under 14 minutes to play.
The Wolverines took the lead back on a triple from McDaniel followed by an and-one jumper from Dickinson. Michigan led by as many as eight points, but Minnesota climbed back within three after a three-pointer by Dawson Garcia.
Despite a three-minute stretch during which U-M did not make a field goal, the Wolverines extended their lead to seven behind six straight free throws from Dickinson. After a Minnesota score, a pair of layups by Terrance Williams II and Kobe Bufkin gave Michigan a 55-46 advantage with three minutes before the final buzzer.
Minnesota made one final push that put them just three points behind the Wolverines, but late free throws by Tschetter, Williams, and Bufkin sealed the 60-54 win.
