ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The No. 3-ranked University of Michigan women's gymnastics team handed No. 11 Ohio State its first loss of the season as it earned a 197.975-196.350 victory Saturday afternoon (Jan. 28) at Crisler Center.
U-M (4-2, 1-1 Big Ten) competed in front of the second-largest crowd in program history, with 8,515 fans in attendance at Crisler Center topping the 7,212 that cheered on the Wolverines in 2018.
U-M swept the event titles against OSU (7-1, 2-1 Big Ten) as junior Naomi Morrison won on the vault and floor exercise and Natalie Wojcik earned the uneven bars and beam titles for the second straight week. Senior Sierra Brooks capped off the Maize and Blue's sweep, scoring a 39.725 to earn the all-around title for the second time this season.
Michigan showed up early, counting four scores of 9.900 or higher on the vault en route to a team score of 49.575 behind a career-high tying 9.975 from Morrison. Senior Gabby Wilson started the string of 9.900s in the third slot before Morrison followed it up with a 9.975 and Brooks scored a 9.950. Abby Heiskell closed for the Wolverines with a 9.900 as U-M headed into the second rotation leading Ohio State 49.575-49.275.
The Wolverines kept rolling on bars as Carly Bauman tied a career-best 9.900 and Brooks matched it in the fourth spot. Wojcik led the Wolverines with a 9.950 as U-M carried a 99.050 into the third rotation to lead the Buckeyes and their 98.500 through two rotations.
Wojcik put together a near-perfect beam routine with a 9.975 to pace Michigan, while Brooks recorded her highest score of the season with a 9.950 to place second overall. Bauman placed third with her 9.850 as U-M took a comfortable advantage into the final rotation of the evening.
The floor squad continued to be impressive season as it earned a 49.575 behind a 9.950 from Morrison. Michigan used four scores of 9.900 or higher for the second time in the afternoon as Heiskell and Brooks earned matching 9.925s and Wilson earned a 9.900 in the anchor spot.
The Wolverines were just shy of their second straight 198.000 inside Crisler Center as they earned a 197.975 to defeat the Buckeyes.
Michigan will hit the road for their next meet, Friday (Feb. 3) against Rutgers in Piscataway, N.J. The competition will begin at 7 p.m. and it will be streamed live on B1G+.
