ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The No. 3-ranked University of Michigan wrestling team earned seven bonus wins, including pins from Will Lewan and Dylan Ragusin, to cruise to a 44-5 win over Maryland on Sunday afternoon (Jan. 29) in front of 1,291 fans at Cliff Keen Arena.
The Wolverines earned four six-point victories with Maryland forfeits -- at 125 and 197 pounds -- and the pins from Lewan and Ragusin. Lewan, ranked 10th nationally at 157 pounds, transitioned a quick double-leg takedown into a leg turk for a four count then the pin against Kevin Schorkat at the 1:47 mark. It was his first fall this season.
Ragusin closed out the dual -- it started at 141 pounds -- with another first-period period against Conner Quinn at 133 pounds. Ragusin, ranked 12th, built up a sizable lead with four takedowns and a four-point cradle and went feet to back off a fireman's carry to collect the fall at 1:58 -- his second of year.
Michigan also earned a pair of technical falls in the shortened second half the dual -- to go with the two forfeits and Ragusin's pin. Matt Finesilver, ranked eighth at 184 pounds, rolled to an 18-0 win against Chase Mielnik, scoring on a quick single-leg takedown before turning the Terrapin with a leg turk five times -- for 16 points -- to end the bout at the 3:00 mark.
Mason Parris, the No. 1-ranked heavyweight in the nation, earned an 18-0 technical fall over Jaron Smith with two takedowns, a reversal and eight back points. He used a fireman's carry and four-point arm bar to build an early lead in the first before breaking it open with a single-leg takedown and four-point tilt late to secure the tech-fall margin. He improved to 21-0 on the season with 15 bonus wins.
Pat Nolan kicked off the dual with a 3-1 win over Kal Miller at 141 pounds, avoiding neutral danger in a late third-period scramble to himself put the Terp wrestler in neutral danger for the winning takedown in the final 10 seconds. It was Nolan's first dual win this season.
Fidel Mayora cruised to a 12-0 major decision over Joe Fisk at 149 pounds with three takedowns -- one per period -- and four-point tilt in the first and 3:29 in riding-time advantage.
Maryland got on the board with a pin at 165 pounds -- though lost a team point from a bench warning and unsportsmanlike conduct after Parris' fall -- while Max Maylor rounded out the Wolverine victories with a 10-7 decision over Dominic Solis at 174 pounds. Maylor scored three takedowns -- two in the first period and a single leg late in the third to ice it -- while earning a second-period reversal and 1:37 in riding time.
Michigan (9-2, 4-2 Big Ten) will travel to the Lone Star State next Friday (Feb. 3) to take on Oklahoma State in the Bout at the Ballpark at Globe Life Field -- home of MLB's Texas Rangers -- in Arlington, Texas. The dual is slated for a 7 p.m. CST start and will be streamed live on Rokfin. Tickets are still available at globelifefield.com/bout.
