ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan men's soccer team earned a 1-1 draw against Wisconsin on Sunday afternoon (Oct. 1) at U-M Soccer Stadium.
U-M (2-3-5, 1-0-3 Big Ten) was led by Joao Paulo Ramos, who scored his second goal of the season, and was one of five freshmen to start against the Badgers (4-2-4, 1-0-3 Big Ten). Isaiah Goldson notched his fifth straight start, while Matthew Fisher and Will Baker continued to be standouts on the defensive end. Michigan is one of five teams that remain unbeaten in conference play with its third Big Ten draw.
The Wolverines threatened early with three straight shots in the 20th minute, including two inside the 18-yard box that forced saves from the keeper and a diving block by the defense. Michigan worked the ball up the right flank 20 minutes later when Fisher brought the ball right outside the 18-yard box for a cross. The Wisconsin keeper got a hand on it and popped it out to Ramos, who finished the shot into the upper-right corner of the net to allow U-M to take a 1-0 advantage in the 40th minute of play.
Michigan controlled the pace of play the entire first half and took a 1-0 lead into the halftime break.
Wisconsin knotted the score in the 60th minute, but the Wolverines continued to work offensively to keep the momentum on their side. In the 83rd minute, Bryce Blevins sent the ball into the box but it wound up into the keeper's hands as the game remained tied at 1-1.
Michigan continued to build on its attack when Zach Martens rocketed a shot from 20 yards out that took a diving save from the keeper, and Michael Leon sent a ball just high of the crossbar in the 86th minute.
U-M kept the ball in its offensive half of the field in the closing minutes and earned a last-second corner, but could not find the back of the net as the game ended in a draw.
Michigan will hit the road for its next match, Friday (Oct. 6) at 7 p.m. against Ohio State in Columbus. The contest will be streamed live on B1G+.
