ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- Behind a pair of Sammi Woods goals, the No. 22-ranked University of Michigan women's soccer team blanked Maryland 4-0 on Sunday (Oct. 1) at U-M Soccer Stadium.
The Wolverines' four goals mark a season-high as they move to 5-0-1 at home on the season and the defense earned its seventh clean sheet of the season.
The Maize and Blue got on the board first, as sophomore Jenna Lang scored in the fifth minute, the fastest goal to start a match on the season. U-M (7-2-3, 3-1-1 Big Ten) has now improved to 4-1-1 in matches in which she scores a goal.
The Terrapins (3-5-5, 0-4-1 Big Ten) quickly gave Michigan an opportunity to push the lead further, as the referee pointed to the spot in the 17th minute after a risky tackle in the box. Woods faced no trouble in converting the penalty.
The penalty conversion was the first of Woods' two goals in the contest, earning the senior forward her seventh multi-goal match of her career and the second such performance against Maryland specifically, the first coming in 2021.
The Wolverines continued to pepper the Terps' defense with a barrage of opportunities, ending the half with a whopping 11 shots, six of which were on goal. The total was the Michigan's highest tally in a half this season — but the record only held until the second half, as Michigan followed up with 15 shots over the final 45 minutes.
The Wolverines took full advantage of those 15 opportunities, adding a pair of goals from freshman forward Gabrielle Prych and Woods in the 55th and 60th minutes, respectively. All told, U-M finished with 26 shots to the Terrapins' eight, also finishing with 11 shots on goal to Maryland's two. With the victory, Michigan improves to 2-0-0 this season when outshooting their opponent.
The 4-0 win is U-M's largest margin of victory since a 7-0 victory over Central Michigan in 2022, and largest Big Ten victory since a 4-0 victory over Maryland in 2020.
