
Michigan Drops Road Contest at Indiana

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- The University of Michigan volleyball team fell 3-0 (25-10, 25-20, 25-12) to Indiana On Saturday night (Oct. 14) at Wilkinson Hall.
Jacque Boney led Michigan with 10 kills and hit .389. Serena Nyambio was second on the team with six kills and was tied with Boney with two blocks on the night. Morgan Burke entered the match as a substitute in the first set but led the team with 18 assists and added five digs. Brooke Humphrey led the team in digs with 18 and added two assists and a service ace.
Indiana (15-6, 5-3 Big Ten) got off to a quick 4-0 first-set lead and pushed it to 6-2, with Saj McBurrows tallying both U-M points. Michigan was able to bring the score to 8-5 after a kill from Boney and a block assist from Boney and Valentina Vaulet. IU then went on a 9-2 run to take a 17-7 lead, but a kill from Nyambio ended the run. However, the Hoosiers took eight of the next 10 points to take the first set 25-10.
Michigan (3-14, 1-7 Big Ten) had a stronger start to the second set with back-to-back aces from Vaulet giving Michigan a 2-0 lead. The Wolverines took a 5-1 lead after kills from Nyambio and Boney and kept their lead early. After IU brought the score within one at 7-6, U-M went on a 3-0 run to take a 10-6 advantage. Nyambio led the run with a solo block and a block assist with Burke. Vaulet and Nyambio tallied a few more kills and gave Michigan a 16-12 lead, but the Hoosiers fought back to tie the score at 16. U-M retook the lead after an IU service error and a Boney kill, but the rest of the set was all Indiana. IU ended the set on a 9-2 run to take the second set 25-20.
The third set played out much like the first as IU took a 4-0 lead to start. Michigan brought the score to 4-3 after kills from Nyambio and Boney and a service ace from Humphrey. IU held the lead for the remainder of the set even as the Wolverines brought the score to within one four more times. Kendall Murray, Boney, Amalia Simmons and Nyambio all tallied the kills that brought the score within one, respectively. After Michigan cut its deficit to 9-8, the Hoosiers went on a 5-0 run. Kills from Simmons and Murray gave Michigan a chance at 15-10, but IU controlled the remainder of the set. The Hoosiers ended the third set on a 10-2 run and took the set 25-12 and the match 3-0.
The Wolverines next will travel to East Lansing to take on rival Michigan State on Wednesday (Oct. 18) at 6 p.m. inside the Breslin Center. The match will be broadcast live on Big Ten Network.
