ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan men's soccer team fell 3-0 to sixth-ranked Notre Dame on Tuesday night (Oct. 17) at U-M Soccer Stadium in a non-conference matchup.
Bryce Blevins and Jason Bucknor each put a shot on goal, while four Wolverines (2-4-7) had two shots apiece.
Michigan went on the offensive early, playing aggressively around the box to earn a free kick in a prime opportunity just under the eight minute mark. Off the free kick, U-M made a trio of tremendous shots that were blocked in the nick of time by the Irish backline.
The Fighting Irish (10-1-3) could not break past the stalwart Wolverines defense for much of the first half, only managing a single shot on goal through the first 40 minutes after four shots were blocked by Michigan defenders.
However, with just 16 seconds left on the clock, Notre Dame managed to slip one past and break the stalemate, sending the teams to the locker rooms with a 1-0 Fighting Irish lead.
The Maize and Blue continued to threaten the Notre Dame backline in the second half in the 47th minute when a shot by Blevins was poked just wide of the goal by a Notre Dame defender.
An unfavorable bounce in the box gave the Fighting Irish their second goal of the game just under the 52 minute mark, pushing the lead to 2-0.
Blevins almost gave the Wolverines their first goal of the contest soon after, making a shot that required a significant save from the Notre Dame goaltender in the 58th minute. Three minutes later, goaltender Isaiah Goldson prevented the Fighting Irish from extending their lead with a tremendous save of his own.
A U-M opportunity looked promising in the 71st minute, but the attack was blown dead by the referee just before the Wolverines could get a shot off. Notre Dame ended the night's scoring in the 82nd minute to push the final score to 3-0.
The Wolverines will travel to State College to take on Penn State on Sunday (Oct. 22) at 4 p.m. in a Big Ten road test. The match will be broadcast live on Big Ten Network.
