Two Doubles Pairs Reach Quarterfinals at ITA Midwest Regionals

ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan men's tennis team had two doubles pairs reach the quarterfinals of the ITA Midwest Regional Championships as the Wolverines hosted the five-day event at the Varsity Tennis Center.
Twenty-two teams in the region came to Ann Arbor with hopes of qualifying for the ITA Fall Nationals.
Gavin Young, already qualified for singles based on his performance at the ITA All-American Championship, paired with Nino Ehrenschneider in doubles this week and won three straight matches before falling 8-5 in the quarterfinals to Bryce Nakashima and Robert Cash of Ohio State. Playing eight-game pro sets, the dup took down pairs from Illinois State, Notre Dame and Toledo.
Jacob Bickersteth and Will Cooksey also reached the quarters after topping duos from Northern Illinois, DePaul and Michigan State, before an 8-6 loss to Jack Anthrop and Preston Stearns (Ohio State) ended their ruun.
Bickersteth went the furthest in the singles main draw, reaching the third round. He won both of his matches on Friday (Oct. 21) defeating Cheng En Tsai (Northern Illinois) in three sets, 3-6, 6-4, 6-2 and Michigan State's Max Sheldon 6-4, 6-2. His run came to a close Sunday (Oct. 22) in a 6-1, 7-6 (1) loss to Jack Anthrop (Ohio State).
Nicholas Steiglehner, Bjorn Swenson, Will Cooksey and Ehrenschneider each went 1-1 on the weekend. Mert Oral qualified for the main draw after winning three matches in the qualifying bracket. He went finished the championship 3-1 in singles play overall.
The Wolverines will send Young to the ITA Fall Nationals, scheduled for Thursday and Friday (Nov. 2-3), while the remainder of the Maize and Blue will compete at the Big Ten Singles and Doubles Championship, Friday and Saturday (Nov. 3 and 4) in Madison, Wis.
