PALO ALTO, Calif. -- With California natives Hailey Borja and Lauren Sung posting top-15 individual finishes, the University of Michigan women's golf team posted an 866 three-day total Sunday (Oct. 22) to close its fall season ninth at the prestigious Stanford Intercollegiate hosted by Dr. Condoleezza Rice on the Stanford Golf Course.
With a 19-team field consisting of 11 among the top 25 and all 19 in the Golfweek top 60, the Wolverines closed Friday's (Oct. 20) afternoon wave first round with a 290 total paced by a pair of 70s (-1) by Borja and Sung. With the California duo pacing play, the Wolverines positioned themselves 10th.
Playing the second round in the morning wave, U-M used Borja's season-low-tying 69 (-2) along with Sung's 72 and Sidney Yermish's 73 to etch a 289 on the board to remain 10th with a 579 36-hole total.
Entering the final round, Borja, Sung and Yermish continued their momentum as they helped U-M finish with its third straight descending team total as the Wolverines' 287 helped them move up one spot and finish among the top half of the field.
Racking up her fourth career top-five finish, Borja's fifth career sub-par 54-hole total of 209 (-4; 70-69-70) -- the second lowest of her career -- helped her tie for fifth in the 100-golfer field. With her even-par 213 (70-72-71), Sung lowered her career-best 54-hole total by six shots, recording her first career top-20 finish, tying for 14th.
With a consistent 74, 73 and 73, Yermish was able to close the fall with a career-low 220 54-hole total to round of the Maize and Blue's top three. After spending four years at UCLA, Emilie Paltrinieri returned to the West Coast and tied for 75th at 228 (77-75-76).
With the completion of the fall season, the Wolverines shift their focus to their midseason training. U-M next will see competition with the spring opener in the Bahamas at the Nexus Bahamas Invitational hosted by Texas Tech. The three-day event (Feb. 12-14) will be played at the Albany Golf Club.
