BROKEN ARROW, Okla. -- Capitalizing on three Wolverines finishin among the top 12 individually, the University of Michigan men's golf team closed its fall season tallying an 853 54-hole total in the rainy final round to earn a runner-up finish Tuesday (Oct. 24) at Oral Roberts' the Clerico played at the Cedar Ridge Country Club. U-M closes the fall with two wins, a runner-up and four top five finishes in five total events.
Heading to Broken Arrow for the fall finale, the Wolverines used a pair of even-par 70s from senior Jude Kim and junior Yuqi Liu to etch a 282 first-round total and position U-M second -- seven shots back of Little Rock's opening 275 (-5).
However, heading back out for the day's second 18, a 68 (-2) from junior Hunter Thomson and a 69 (-1) from redshirt-junior Ben Hoagland, the Maize and Blue tallied its 11th sub-par team total of the fall with a 279 (-1) to cut six shots off Little Rock's lead and the Wolverines (561) trailed by just a shot after 36-holes.
As a slow and steady light rain fell in the final round, Little Rock stumbled out of the gates giving the Wolverines the lead for most of the final round. Despite a third straight 71 (+1) from senior Will Anderson, U-M equaled the Trojans' closing 292 to finish a stroke behind and close as the runner-up with an 853 54-hole total.
With those three straight 71s (+1), Anderson finished his fall with a 213 tally to post a season-best tie for seventh individual finish. Thomson (71-68-74) mirrored Anderson's 213 as he produced his fourth top-10 finish in five fall events also tying for seventh.
Hoagland's 214 total tied him for 11th, giving him four top-20 finishes in the opening half of the season, while Kim posted a second straight 216 54-hole total to give him a 20th-place finish. Rounding out U-M's starting five was Liu, who tied for 32nd with a 219 total.
With the fall season completed, the Wolverines shift their focus to a three-month training break. U-M heads back out to tournament action on Feb. 11 when the Wolverines play in UNC Greensboro's Palmas De Mar Collegiate in Puerto Rico (Feb. 11-13). The three-day, 54-hole (18-18-18) spring opener will be played at the Palmas De Mar's Flamboyan Course.
