ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- A dominant offensive run at the end of the first half helped the University of Michigan men's basketball team earn its second win of the season, 92-62, over Youngstown State on Friday night (Nov. 10) in Crisler Center.
Leaders and Best
U-M (2-0) was led by Will Tschetter, who scored 20 points, shot 8-for-8 from the field and 4-for-4 from beyond the arc. Olivier Nkamhoua scored 17 points, Dug McDaniel scored 16 points and Terrance Williams II added 13 points to help the Wolverines.
Turning Point
Michigan was in a tight contest with Youngstown State (0-2) for the first 16 minutes of the game but all of the momentum shifted to the Wolverines as they went on a 13-0 run over the final 3:36 of the first half.
First Half
The Wolverines opened the game with a jump shot by Williams II and a slam by Tarris Reed Jr. to put Michigan up 4-0 two minutes into play. Youngstown State and Michigan traded baskets as Michigan led 10-7 with 16:20 remaining in the first. A shot by Nkamhoua and a response by YSU's Ziggy Reid put the score 12-9 in favor of U-M at the first media timeout with 15:37 left in the half.
Returning from the timeout, Nkamhoua made a second-chance layup and, after a Penguin free throw, came down on the offensive end and threw down a powerful dunk. On the following possession, a block by Nimari Burnett would set up McDaniel on a fast-break floater which put U-M out in front 18-10.
The Penguins continued to trim the Michigan lead with a three-pointer and a layup, and inched closer as U-M led 18-15. Less than 20 seconds later, McDaniel completed a four-point play that put the Wolverines up 22-15 before another media timeout with 11:36 left in the half.
Both teams struggled with turnovers after the media timeout but Michigan capitalized on a Penguin turnover with a fast-break layup from George Washington III and then after a defensive stand, Tschetter scored on a contested shot to put U-M up 26-15 with 9:39 remaining.
A three-pointer by Tschetter with 8:18 remaining extended the Michigan lead to 29-18 but that turned out to be the last points the Wolverines scored until 4:53 when a layup by McDaniel extended Michigan's lead, 31-20. The offensive woes were not exclusive to U-M. In that span, the Penguins were held to just two points.
Scoring picked up as Michigan netted six points from McDaniel, Williams II and Nkamhoua pushed the Michigan lead to 14 with 2:49 remaining.
The Wolverines scored nine points in the final two minutes -- highlighted by baskets from McDaniel, Williams II and Tschetter. U-M closed out the half leading YSU, 46-23.
Second Half
Michigan started the final 20 minutes with two shots each from Reed and Nkamhoua and a three-pointer from Williams II to put the Wolverines up 57-28.
A three-pointer from Nkamhoua and shot by McDaniel highlighted what became a 35-point lead with 14 minutes left in the game.
Despite Youngstown State starting to pick it up on the offensive end, Michigan continued to respond and worked to ensure the scoring margin did not go below 30 -- thanks in part to buckets from Tray Jackson and Tschetter.
A rebound by Jackson and a pass to Tschetter on the fast break put the Wolverines up 74-36 with 9:29 left in the game. After multiple baskets from the Penguins, Tschetter scored again, this time a three-pointer as the Wolverines led 79-40 heading into a media timeout with 7:14 left.
Following the timeout, Youssef Khayat made a shot down low off an offensive rebound and Tschetter hit another three-pointer. Washington found the bottom of the basket with a three-pointer of his own. After two made technical free throws by Ian Burns, U-M led 88-49 with less than five minutes remaining.
A jump shot by Khayat before a media timeout extended Michigan's lead by 43 points with 3:16 left. The bucket by Khayat turned out to be Michigan's final points of the game.
