LINCOLN, Neb. -- The University of Michigan volleyball team fell to No. 1-ranked Nebraska (15-25, 12-25, 20-25) on the road at Bob Devaney Sports Center on Friday night (Nov. 17).
Michigan (7-19, 5-12 Big Ten) was led by Valentina Vaulet on offense who tallied nine kills in the match and added three blocks. Serena Nyambio also tallied three blocks and added three digs and four kills. Morgan Burke registered 24 assists in the match and added six digs, one block, an ace and a kill. Maddi Cuchran led the team in digs with seven.
Nebraska (26-0, 17-0 Big Ten) took an early lead in the first set with a 6-2 advantage. The Wolverines fought back and brought the score to 7-5 on a kill from Vaulet and a block assist from Vaulet and Nyambio, but the Huskers used an efficient offensive attack to pull away and take a 15-9 lead. Michigan was able to fight off one set point with a kill from Kendall Murray, but Nebraska took the first 25-15.
The second set was much like the first as the Huskers took an early lead, going up 11-3 before a 3-0 U-M run -- which included an ace from Burke and a solo block on the run from Nyambo brought Michigan closer. The rally was cut short, however, as Nebraska's .474 hitting percentage in the second set proved too much for the Wolverines, and the Huskers raced out to a 25-12 second set victory for a 2-0 lead in the match.
Despite being down 2-0 in the contest, U-M took an early lead in the third set. A Cornhusker attack error gave U-M the first point of the frame and a kill from Nyambio put the Wolverines up 2-1 before Amalia Simmons tallied back-to-back kills for a 4-2 U-M advantage. Nebraska tied the match at seven, but a kill from Jacque Boney put the Wolverines back ahead. Nebraska then went on a 4-0 run to take an 11-8 lead and managed to keep the lead for the remainder of the set. The Wolverines brought the score to within one, 19-18, after a 3-0 run that included two kills from Vaulet and a block assist from Vaulet and Nyambio. Michigan could not keep the momentum, however, as the Huskers ended the match on a 5-2 run and took the final set 25-20. Â
Michigan will continue action on the road and face off against Illinois on Saturday (Nov. 18) in Champaign, Ill. at 6:00 p.m. CT. The match will be streamed live on B1G+.
