ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan women's basketball team used a 12-0 run in the middle stages of the first quarter and never looked back in a 95-41 exhibition win over Saginaw Valley State on Thursday (Nov. 2) at Crisler Center.
All 11 active Wolverines found the scoring column, led by Laila Phelia (23 points), Cameron Williams (16) and Lauren Hansen (10).
Phelia notched the first nine points for the Wolverines to start the game as the Wolverines weathered a slow start. After falling behind 7-4 in the early going, Phelia hit a triple and another layup to cap her early flurry as Michigan took a lead it never relinquished. Those five points jumpstarted a 12-0 run for the Wolverines, featuring a layup from Taylor Williams, a three from Greta Kampschroeder and another layup from Phelia to cap the spurt. Phelia finished the first quarter with 13 points as U-M led 29-16 after 10 minutes.
The Wolverines continued to dominate during the second quarter, scoring the first nine points for a 13-0 run over both quarters. Phelia finished the first half with 18 points as the Wolverines held a 51-23 lead after 20 minutes of action.
Williams went to work in the third, scoring 12 straight Wolverines points to go with four boards in the quarter as the home team led 73-35 after 30 minutes.
The Wolverines continued to dominate in the fourth, ending the game with their largest lead of 55.
Michigan will officially kick off the 2023-24 season against Purdue Fort Wayne at Crisler on Monday (Nov. 6) at 7 p.m.
