LITTLE ROCK, Ark. -- Sanford Robertson Offensive Coordinator/Donald C. Graham Football Offensive Line Coach Sherrone Moore of the University of Michigan football program was announced Monday (Nov. 27) as one of five finalists for the 2023 Broyles Award presented by the Frank and Barbara Broyles Foundation. The award honors college football's top assistant coach and was established in 1996 to recognize legendary head football coach Frank Broyles.
Moore is the ninth Wolverine assistant to be named a finalist for the award, and the third on the current staff (Jesse Minter, 2022; Mike Hart, 2018 at Indiana). This is Moore's first time being named a finalist. The other four finalists are Mike Bobo (offensive coordinator, Georgia), Mike Denbrock (offensive coordinator, LSU), Phil Parker (defensive coordinator/secondary coach, Iowa), and Will Stein (offensive coordinator, Oregon).
The Wolverines are 12-0 for the second year in a row, a program first. It is the program's fifth season overall with at least 12 wins. The offense has been historically productive, with at least three offensive touchdowns in each game and the only player in the FBS to score at least one touchdown in every game (Blake Corum).
Moore is the only Power Five coordinator also to serve as his team's offensive line coach. He was also Michigan's acting head coach for four games during the 2023 season, winning all four including two top-10 matchups at Penn State and against Ohio State.
The Michigan offense averages 37.6 points per contest (13th), and U-M set a single-season program record with 30-plus points in 12 straight games dating to last season (through week nine in 2023) and have hit that mark in 11-of-12 contents this year. Michigan's average margin of victory of +27.3 points is the country's highest figure.
Under Moore's direction, U-M has converted on third downs at a rate of 49.6 percent (eighth, NCAA) and on fourth downs at a rate of 77.8 percent (fifth, NCAA). Quarterback J.J. McCarthy has been especially effective for the offense, completing 47-of-62 third- and fourth-down attempts (75.8 percent) with six touchdowns.
Moore's offensive line unit is the heart of the Michigan offense. A two-time winner of the Joe Moore Award, given to the top O-Line in college football, the unit is a semifinalist again in 2023 under his tutelage. Together, they have allowed just 14 sacks across 12 games (1.17 per game), the fewest in the Big Ten. They suffer the fifth-fewest negative plays on average (3.3 tackles for loss allowed per game) and have led the Wolverines to 33 rushing touchdowns this season, tied for the third-most in the country.
In addition to the offensive line and McCarthy, Moore's coaching has led individuals to success including Corum, who leads the nation in points scored (132) and rushing touchdowns (22), a single-season record at Michigan, and Roman Wilson, whose 11 receiving touchdowns are the most by a Wolverine since 2007.
The five finalists will travel to Little Rock, Ark., where the winner will be announced at the Broyles Award Ceremony on Tuesday, Dec. 5.
Michigan plays for the Big Ten Championship on Saturday (Dec. 2) at 8 p.m. on Fox.
