MADISON, Wis. -- Wisconsin scored with 6.5 seconds left in regulation to defeat the University of Michigan ice hockey team 2-1 on Saturday (Nov. 4) at Kohl Center to earn a sweep of the Wolverines.
Jake Barczewski started in net for U-M and looked excellent throughout, turning aside 29 shots while surrendering a pair of goals to shoulder a second consecutive loss.
Michigan's first power-play opportunity came at 6:40; forward Rutger McGroarty sent a shot off the post, but the team failed to register a tally before play returned to even strength. The team used the chance to help build an early 9-2 advantage in shots on goal.
Wisconsin's second power play, which started with 7:02 remaining, got the scoring started the Badgers cashed in 10 seconds later to take a 1-0 lead for the second night in a row.
Michigan (5-4-1, 1-2-1 Big Ten) ended the opening stanza with a 12-11 edge in shots on goal, but the team trailed 1-0 where it mattered most. UW built up a decisive 16-8 lead in the faceoff dot in the first period.
After a scoreless second period, Wisconsin (9-1-0 4-0-0 Big Ten) maintained its one-goal lead and had carved out a 24-21 advantage in shots on goal. Through 40 minutes, UW's power play was 1-for-4 while U-M had gone 0-for-3.
Shortly after play returned to five skaters per side early in the third period, Michigan's persistent effort in the offensive zone paid off when freshman forward Garrett Schifsky ripped a firm, low shot that trickled through the Badger goaltender's five-hole and across the goal line to tie the game at 1:16. Frank Nazar III and Jacob Truscott earned assists on Schifsky's fifth marker of the season.
U-M was penalized for roughing at 7:47 when Luca Fantilli sent a UW skater into the boards. Prior to the puck dropping on the fifth Wisconsin power play, the Badgers decided to challenge the play for a major penalty. After the challenge failed, the two-minute advantage proceeded.
Michigan thought it had scored with 1:40 left after McGroarty launched a one-timer from the right circle while Duke went hard to the net. Just before Duke tumbled into the net, McGroarty appeared to tuck a shot into the twine. After a video review, the officials disagreed and assessed U-M a bench minor penalty for delay of game.
On the ensuing power-play chance, Michigan's penalty killers attempted to get the game to overtime but conceded the go-ahead goal.
UW ended the night with a 31-29 edge in shots on goal, a vast 38-28 lead in the faceoff dot, and a pair of power-play goals compared to a scoreless power-play unit for the Wolverines.
Next week, the Wolverines return home for another ranked showdown when they host Minnesota for a pair of Big Ten games on Friday and Saturday (Nov. 10-11) at Yost Ice Arena. Puck drop for both games is set for 7 p.m., and the contests will be streamed live on B1G+.
