MADISON, Wis. -- Bjorn Swenson of the University of Michigan men's tennis team made runs in each singles and doubles at the 2023 Big Ten Singles and Doubles Championships at the University of Wisconsin. Swenson reached the singles semifinals as well and the doubles championship match with partner Alex Cairo.
Swenson and Cairo paired up for the first time this season and knocked off three straight opponents all by 6-3 scores to reach the championship match on Sunday (Nov. 5). The duo's streak was halted by Ohio State's Bryce Nakashima and Preston Stearns in the title tilt in a 6-1 decision.
Nino Ehrenschneider and Patorn Hanchaikul reached the semifinals as well, topping teams from Nebraska and Indiana before falling to Nakashima and Sterns in the semifinal in 7-6 (4) match.
Swenson stayed hot in singles play, taking down Rudolf Christiansen (Nebraska), Loren Byers (Penn State) and Saiprakash Goli (Northwestern) winning a 10-point tiebreaker in all three matches. In the semifinals, Swenson took Calvin Mueller (Nebraska) to a 10-point tiebreaker but came up short to miss advancing to the final.
Cairo reached the third round of singles play with a 6-4, 6-3 win over Deacon Thomas (Indiana) before falling to Nakashima in two sets in the third round. He finished the weekend 1-2.
Nicholas Steiglehner, Hanchaikul, Ehrenschneider went 3-1 while Mert Oral finished 3-2.
With the fall season complete, the Wolverines will begin their dual season on Jan. 15 when they host DePaul at the Varsity Tennis Center.
