
Boney, Burke Spark Set Comebacks in Michigan Sweep of Maryland

ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- Morgan Burke's double-double and Jacque Boney's career-high kills total led the University of Michigan volleyball team to a sweep of Maryland (25-22, 25-20, 25-14) at Cliff Keen Arena on Sunday afternoon (Nov. 5).
The sweep was the second of the weekend, and third of the season, after blanking Iowa on Friday (Nov. 3).
Burke led Michigan in assists (33), digs (10) and aces (three), with the assists and digs marks giving her a third career double-double. She also tallied her fifth straight match with 30 assists or more. Boney tied her career high in kills with 14 and hit .500 on 24 attempts while tallying five blocks to tie Saj McBurrows for the team lead. Michigan tallied 10 total blocks which helped hold Maryland to just a .078 hitting percentage.
Maryland (15-11, 5-9 Big Ten) took a 6-2 lead early in the first set. The Wolverines were able to fight back and tied the match at eight with a kill from Boney. Kendall Murray gave Michigan the lead with a service ace at 9-8. With the score tied at 12, Michigan went on a 5-0 run led by two aces from Valentina Vaulet. Maryland tied the score at 20 and took a 22-20 lead, but Michigan ended the first set on a 5-0 run. Three kills from Vaulet, a Maryland attack error and a kill from Serena Nyambio gave Michigan the first set 25-20.
Michigan (6-17, 4-10 Big Ten) took a 2-1 lead in the second set after a block from Boney and Murray to open the set and a Murray kill for the lead. Maryland went on another big run like the first set with the score tied at four and took a six-point lead. Maryland held Michigan at bay for a little longer and took a 15-7 lead. Michigan then found its stride and went on an 8-0 run to tie the match at 15. Three different Wolverines tallied kills as Murray added two blocks, one assisted with Boney. Michigan took its first lead of the set since 2-1 at 17-16 with another Boney kill. She tallied two more kills in the set, including a kill at 19-18 which gave Michigan the lead for the rest of the set. Vaulet tallied two kills in the final five U-M points and Nyambio registered the final kill of the set on a ball from Burke to give Michigan the second set 25-20.
After large comebacks and 17 tied scores over the first two sets, the third set was all Michigan. A kill from Murray opened the set before the Terps tied it at two. Michigan got the lead back on a block from McBurrows and Boney and did not let Maryland back into the match. Down 12-6, the Terrapins took their second timeout of the set, and out of the timeout, Burke added to the Michigan lead with two service aces. Michigan extended its lead to 17-6 on a kill from Vaulet. Hannah Grant tallied an ace to make the score 20-10. The final five Michigan points consisted of two Maryland errors, two kills and a solo block from Boney and the Wolverines took set three 25-14.
Michigan will head east next weekend for two matches, starting with a trip to State College, Pa., to battle No. 16 Penn State on Friday (Nov. 10). First serve is scheduled for 7 p.m., and the match will be streamed live on B1G+.
