ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- Elissa Brett hit eight three-pointers en route to 27 points as the University of Michigan women's basketball team defeated Miami (Ohio) 75-49 on Saturday morning (Dec. 16) at Crisler Center. The win was No. 250 at Michigan for J. Ira and Nicki Harris Family Head Women's Basketball Coach Kim Barnes Arico, who joins John Beilein as the only Michigan basketball coaches to reach the mark.
Brett tied a career high with 27 points, going 8-for-11 from deep with seven boards and two assists. Her eight made triples are tied for the third-best single-game performance in program history as U-M recorded its fourth game this season with at least 10 triples. Michigan shot an even 50 percent from deep, hitting 13 three-pointers in the game. Jordan Hobbs joined Brett in double figures with 12 points, six boards and five assists, with Laila Phelia turning in nine points and Lauren Hansen eight.
Michigan raced out to a 7-0 lead on a jumper from Hansen, a triple from Brett and a layup from Hobbs. The RedHawks got on the board with a pair of free throws with 4:50 remaining in the period. U-M held Miami in single-digit scoring in the first 10 minutes, leading 15-9 after the completion of the first quarter.
A Taylor Woodson steal-and-score forced a Miami timeout with 6:25 remaining in the second quarter as U-M's lead grew to 24-16. Brett made her fourth triple of the game and Phelia hit back-to-back triples from the same spot to cap a 13-0 run for the home team, good for a 33-17 lead.
Michigan hit the half with a 38-23 lead behind 14 first-half points from Brett.
Phelia cashed in a triple in the opening minute of the third quarter but U-M struggled offensively over the next several minutes. Back-to-back triples from Brett and Greta Kampschroeder forced a Miami timeout with 3:02 on the clock with Michigan up 47-31. The RedHawks scored the final seven points of the quarter to trim the U-M advantage to 47-38 after 30 minutes of action.
The Miami run continued into the fourth quarter, with the RedHawks scoring four of the first five points. Hobbs converted a three-point play with just over eight minutes remaining to nudge the U-M lead back to nine, 51-42. The bucket jumpstarted a 9-0 run for Michigan, capped by another Hobbs layup for a 57-42 lead with 6:18 remaining.
That was all the space the Wolverines needed as the lead never dipped below double figures the rest of the way. Brett and Hobbs each scored 10 points as U-M exploded for 28 in the final stanza en route to the win.
U-M is back in action on Wednesday (Dec. 20), heading to Charlotte, N.C., for the Jumpman Invitational. Michigan will face Florida at 6:30 p.m. at the Spectrum Center, with the game airing on ESPN2.
