IOWA CITY, Iowa -- Graduate student Matt Finesilver and fifth-year senior Mason Parris earned wins at 184 pounds and heavyweight, respectively, while the No. 9-ranked University of Michigan wrestling team fell to No. 2 Iowa 33-8 on Friday night (Feb. 10) at Carver-Hawkeye Arena.
Parris, ranked No. 1 nationally, rallied from a late third-period deficit to defeat No. 3 Tony Cassioppi 9-7 and stay undefeated on the season. Parris scored on two single-leg takedowns to build an early lead in the first period, but Cassioppi took advantage of two flurries to claw back with two takedowns of his own -- putting Parris is neutral danger out of a scramble late in the second and scoring out of a flurry to take a two-point lead, 7-5, in the third.
Parris escaped quickly and, still trailing by one, baited the Hawkeye into a half shot and spun behind to retake the lead with 1:10 remaining. He flattened Cassioppi out and rode out the remainder of the match, earning 1:41 in time advantage to seal the victory. He improved to 23-0 on the season, with his fourth top-10 win this season.
Finesilver, ranked eighth, cruised to a 15-0 technical fall over Drake Rhodes at 184 pounds to put the Wolverines on the board. He scored on a pair of takedowns and earned 10 back points on three separate leg turks to end the bout in 4:38. Finesilver is 18-5 on the season; it was his team-best sixth win by tech fall.
Graduate student Jack Medley fell 11-2 to top-ranked, three-time NCAA champion Spencer Lee in the dual's first bout -- just the fourth match for Lee this season to go the distance.
Sophomore/freshman Chance Lamer and junior/sophomore Joseph Walker both returned to the lineup after missing three weeks or more due to injury -- U-M was missing three other starters in tonight's dual -- and dropped decision losses at 149 and 174 pounds, respectively.
Lamer fell 10-4 to sixth-ranked Max Murin in a bout that featured multiple blood stoppages for both wrestlers; Lamer fought over the last 30 seconds to avoid giving up bonus. Walker trailed 16th-ranked Nelson Brand by just one in the third period before the Hawkeye used a go-behind takedown and rideout to seal a 5-1 decision.
Senior/junior Will Lewan, ranked ninth, dropped a 3-1 overtime decision to 16th-ranked Cobe Siebrecht. Lewan shot in deep on a double leg in sudden victory, was close to finishing when Siebrecht scrambled to steal the takedown. All three of Lewan's dual defeats have been in overtime.
Michigan (9-4, 4-3 Big Ten) will return home to host No. 22 Indiana at noon on Sunday (Feb. 12) at Cliff Keen Arena. Tickets are available through the U-M Ticket Office.
