PISCATAWAY, N.J. -- The No. 3-ranked University of Michigan women's gymnastics team recorded the second-highest score in program history with a 198.300 to take first at the Rutgers Quad Meet on Friday evening (Feb. 3) at Jersey Mike's Arena.
Michigan defeated Rutgers (194.700) in Big Ten competition, while Southern Connecticut State finished in third with a 190.700 and Fisk earned a 188.175.
The Wolverines (6-2, 2-1, Big Ten) earned their second 198 of the season and the ninth in program history behind two perfect 10s from Sierra Brooks and Abby Heiskell on the vault to close out the meet. The perfect score is the third of Brooks' career and the second for Heiskell.
Heiskell put together one of the best all-around performances in the history of U-M women's gymnastics, tying for fifth all-time with a 39.800. The Charlotte, N.C., native recorded four scores of 9.925 or higher, including a career-best 9.950 on beam and a 10 on the vault.
The Maize and Blue swept the event titles for the second straight week as Heiskell notched the vault, beam and all-around titles, Brooks earned a share of the vault title, Carly Bauman earned her first career title on the uneven bars and Naomi Morrison clinched her second consecutive floor exercise win.
Altogether, Michigan had six career-high scores from individuals as Bauman earned her first career title with a career-best 9.950 on the bars and Reyna Gugginno scored a career-best 9.900 on floor.
The Wolverines earned their second-highest team score of the season on uneven bars with a 49.575 behind four scores of 9.925 or higher, including a career-best 9.950 from Bauman. Heiskell led off the rotation with a 9.925, and Brooks and Natalie Wojcik closed it out with back-to-back 9.925s to put Michigan in the lead after one complete rotation.
Behind two career-high scores from Nicoletta Koulos and Heiskell, U-M earned a season-high 49.450 on the beam to move its running score to 99.025 to remain in the lead. Koulos recorded a career-best 9.875 followed by a matching 9.875 from Brooks. Heiskell got on the beam and strung together a beautiful routine to earn a 9.950 to lead Michigan.
Morrison led U-M on floor with her second straight 9.950, while Guggino, Heiskell and Brooks all recorded scores of 9.900 or better to push Michigan to a team score of 49.525 in the third rotation. The Wolverines held on to a comfortable lead going into the final rotation with a running score of 148.500.
U-M's vaults kept getting better as Wojcik scored a 9.925 and Gabby Wilson followed it up with a 9.975 before Brooks and Heiskell capped off the night with perfect 10s to propel Michigan to victory.
The Wolverines return to action next Friday (Feb. 10) when they welcome Minnesota to Crisler Center at 5:30 p.m. for their annual Flip for Chip Meet. The meet will be broadcast live on ESPNU.
