ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan football team conducted its 2023 spring game at Michigan Stadium on Saturday (April 1) with the Maize team beating the Blue team by a score of 22-21.
Down 21-14 with just 1:46 remaining, Leon Franklin (Maize Team) accepted a handoff from quarterback Davis Warren and ran the ball five yards for Franklin's second touchdown of the day. On the two-point conversion play, Warren connected with wide receiver Peyton O'Leary for the 22-21 lead.
A clutch pass breakup by Keshaun Harris ended the Blue Team's attempt to respond as time expired.
Early-game touchdowns were scored by Kalel Mullings (Blue Team, run) and Jake Thaw (Maize Team, receiving) and the game was 7-7 at halftime. Both teams scored again in the fourth quarter. First, Blue Team back Benjamin Hall followed a long run with a short touchdown. Then, Maize Team back Franklin scored to tie the game again.
Late in the fourth quarter, the Blue Team added what looked to be the game-winning score on a pass from quarterback Alex Orji to A.J. Barner, but the Maize team regained the lead on Franklin's score and the ensuing two-point conversion.
The Blue defense earned two interceptions (Quinten Johnson, Myles Pollard) and one fumble recovery (Mullings) while the Maize defense made one interception of its own (Zeke Berry).
The Wolverines will complete spring practice early next week and then turn their focus to the 2023 season, beginning with the season opener against East Carolina (Sept. 2).
