
Schoonmaker, Turner, Moody Chosen on Second Day of 2023 NFL Draft

KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- The University of Michigan football program saw three more players chosen during Friday's (April 28) second day of the 2023 NFL Draft, as tight end Luke Schoonmaker (58th overall, Dallas Cowboys) and defensive back DJ Turner (60th, Cincinnati Bengals) were selected during the second round and kicker Jake Moody (99th, San Francisco 49ers) was selected in the third round.
This marks the second year in a row that three U-M players have been taken in the top 60 picks following defensive lineman Mazi Smith's first-round selection on Friday, and the fourth time in the last five years that at least three Wolverines have been among the top 100 selections.
The Cowboys made Schoonmaker the 58th overall selection with their second-round pick. He is the 12th Wolverine drafted by Dallas and the first tight end. Schoonmaker and will join former U-M teammate Mazi Smith and former Wolverines Jourdan Lewis and Sean McKeon on the roster.
Schoonmaker led the tight end corps and was second on the team with 35 receptions totaling 418 yards (11.9 avg.) and three touchdowns in 2022. The Hamden, Connecticut, native came through in a big way during Michigan's Big Ten Championship run, collecting 31 receptions for 351 yards and the three TDs. A 2022 Mackey Award candidate, Schoonmaker earned third-team All-Big Ten honors after starting 11 games and playing in 12 contests.
He was a five-year letterman and multi-year starter on back-to-back championship teams. Schoonmaker appeared in 44 career contests, earning 21 starts at tight end, and played in 39 of those contests at tight end. He finished his career with 55 receptions for 637 yards and seven touchdowns. Schoonmaker was named the team's Most Improved Player and earned All-Big Ten honorable mention accolades in 2021.
The Bengals chose Turner 60th overall with their second-round pick. He is the 16th Wolverine to be selected by Cincinnati in the draft and the third defensive back, joining first-round picks Leon Hall (2007) and Daxton Hill (2022). Turner will join former U-M teammates Daxton Hill and Chris Evans on the roster.
Turner turned heads into the NFL after posting a 4.26-second time in the 40-yard dash, the fastest of any player at the 2023 NFL Combine and the fourth fastest since 2003. The four-year letterman for the Wolverines appeared in 37 career games with 22 starting assignments at cornerback. Turner recorded 69 tackles, two tackles for loss, three interceptions, and 20 pass breakups during his career. He earned All-Big Ten honors twice (2021-22) while sharing the team's Most Improved Player on defense and the Defensive Skill Player of the Year award in 2021.
As a senior in 2022, Turner earned All-Big Ten second-team honors after starting all 14 games at cornerback. He contributed a career-best 36 tackles, one tackle for loss, one interception, one fumble recovery for a touchdown, and 11 pass breakups. All 11 of his PBUs came during the conference slate, registering at least one in eight of the 10 games. Statistically, his numbers almost mirrored his junior season in 2021, where Turner posted 33 stops, one TFL, two interceptions, and nine PBUs as he earned honorable mention all-conference accolades.
Moody was San Francisco's third-round selection, No. 99 overall, but their second pick in this year's draft. He is the 17th Wolverine selected by the 49ers organization and will join former U-M teammate Ambry Thomas on the west coast. Moody is the highest-drafted specialist in Michigan history and the program's first placekicker to be drafted since Hayden Epstein (2002) and the first U-M specialist to be drafted since Zoltan Mesko (2010).
Michigan's all-time leading scorer, Moody appeared in a school record 60 career games. He scored 355 points, converting 69-of-84 field goals (82.1%) and all 148 PATs. Moody became the third player in school history to record consecutive seasons with 100-plus points, joining running backs Anthony Thomas (1999-2000) and Tom Harmon (1939-40). He holds 13 game, season, and career kicking records at Michigan. As the team's kickoff specialist, 213 of Moody's 374 kickoffs were touchbacks (57%).
Moody won the 2021 Lou Groza Award (U-M's first-ever) as the nation's outstanding kicker and was one of three finalists for the 2022 award. A two-time All-American, he was a consensus first-team honoree in 2021 and a second-team All-American in 2022. Moody was the two-time Big Ten Kicker of the Year and two-time All-Big Ten first-team performer (2021-22). In the classroom, he was a four-time Academic All-Big Ten recipient and was named to the 2021 CoSIDA Academic All-District 5 team.
Rounds 4-7 of the 2023 NFL Draft will be held on Saturday (April 29) beginning at noon on ABC, ESPN, and NFL Network.
