GALLOWAY, New Jersey -- Paced by an opening 75 from sophomore Hunter Thomson, the University of Michigan men's golf team posted a 324 team tally and is 13th after day one of the 2023 Big Ten Championships being played at the Galloway National Golf Club.
Battling rain, chilly and windy conditions throughout the opening 18 holes, the 70-golfer field closed the first round with a 78.49 average on the challenging and prestigious Galloway National. In fact, the first round saw just 106 birdies, with 65 of those coming on the four par 5s (Nos 6, 9, 11, 16).
For the Maize and Blue, Thomson once again paced the Wolverines with his opening 75 (+4). After opening his second championship with a birdie, he rattled off seven straight pars before a backside closing bogey had him turn to the front even par. A double bogey on No. 1 and bogeys on Nos 5 and 6 were the lone blemishes on the first side as he closed with his 75 to position him among the top 15 and just three shots back of the top three. Overall, his 13 pars on the opening 18 tied him for the second most of the day.
In their second career Big Ten Championships, junior Jude Kim opened with an 80 (t-47th), while redshirt-junior Jack O'Donnell carded an 83 (t-56th).
With two among the top five individually, No. 3 Illinois took the first-day lead with an opening 292 total, while Northwestern is second at 298 and Wisconsin third at 299.
