WESTFIELD, Ind. -- Highlighted by a pair of top-20 finishes from junior Monet Chun (t-13th) and senior Hailey Borja (t-17th), the 44th-ranked University of Michigan women's golf team tallied a 289 (+1) final-round total Wednesday (May 10) to finish ninth with an 866 (+2) 54-hole total at the NCAA Westfield Regional played at the Club at Chatham Hills. Not finishing among the top-five teams, the Wolverines have closed their 2022-23 season.
Competing in its third straight NCAA regional, U-M began the postseason battle with a five-under-par 283 on Monday to position itself among the top three. A second round 294 on Tuesday (May 9) slipped the Wolverines to eighth as they found themselves trailing by six shots for a top-five position. Michigan improved with a final-round 289 (+1), but missed the cut for the NCAA Finals by 11 shots after an 866 (+2) total.
Advancing out of the Westfield Regional were regional champion No. 5 Mississippi State (845, -19), Oregon State (847, -17), No. 17 Vanderbilt (848, -16), No. 25 Virginia (849, -15) and No. 36 Tulsa (855, -9).
As they had done all season, Chun and Borja paced the Maize and Blue and it was no different in regional play. After matching each other with tallies of 70 (-2) and 71 (-1) over the first 36 holes, Chun edged Borja with a closing 71 (-1), paced by four birdies. With Chun's 212 (-4) total, she tied for 13th, while Borja saved her best for last. After starting two-over through seven holes, she closed her final 11 two-under to post a final 72, yielding a 213 (-3) total, which tied her for 17th.
With her score, Borja closeed the season as U-M's scoring leader at 72.91 -- the second lowest single-round average in program history. Both Chun, who averaged 73.14, and Borja tied for the team lead with 11 sub-par rounds. Also, for the second time in three events, Chun posted three straight sub-par rounds for a sub-par 54-hole tally. The only other Wolverine to accomplish this was Borja.
Starting the final four events, including both in the postseason, freshman Sydney Sung, who tied for 43rd, opened her regional with a career-low 71 (-1) and followed with tallies of 75 and 77 to post a career-low 223 54-hole total -- a new best by six shots. Twin sister Lauren Sung followed Borja's final-round lead playing her final 11 holes at two-under to close at even-par 72. After opening tallies of 75 and 77, she posted a 224 total to tie for 47th.
Utilizing the substitution rules, senior Anika Dy replaced fellow senior Mikaela Schulz (72-83) for the final round. Dy, who missed the first two rounds due to illness, closed her last collegiate round with a two-over 74.
