CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. -- The University of Michigan volleyball team fell to Boston College in three sets (25-18, 25-22, 25-14) on Friday (Aug. 25) in the Wolverines' season opener in the Boston College Invitational at Margot Connell Recreation Center.
Jacque Boney led the U-M offense and defense with seven kills on 10 attacks for a .600 hitting percentage and added three total blocks (two solo, one assist). Scottee Johnson tallied 25 assists and added a kill, a block and six digs on the night.
Boston College (1-0) started the match off strong, taking five of the first six points of the match. Serena Nyambio broke up the scoring run with the first kill of the season. After a kill from Johnson and an ace from Kendall Murray, the teams split the next four points. The Eagles once again went on a scoring run that saw them win six of the next seven points to take an 11-5 lead.
Michigan (0-1) tried to battle back and managed to bring it within two, 16-14, after a 5-0 scoring run led by two kills from both Valentina Vaulet and Amalia Simmons. The Eagles called a timeout, which stopped the Wolverines' momentum as U-M fell 25-18 in the first set.
In the second set, the Maize and Blue kept it close throughout, never falling more than five points behind. Two aces helped Michigan keep it close early with Hannah Grant and Vaulet both tallying one.
Saj McBurrows tallied an ace to make the score 17-14 before the Eagles took the next two points. Michigan then took four of the next six points with Boney leading the way in the span with a kill, a solo block and a block assist with Johnson. McBurrows tried to keep the U-M in it with three kills in the final six points, but Boston College took the second set 25-22.
After going down 3-0 to start the third set, U-M fought back to tie it at 4. Murray registered a kill, her first of three in the set and one of six on the night. Vaulet added two kills within the first eight points, bringing her total to six on the night as well. Michigan could not hold on and the Eagles took nine of the next 11 points to take a 13-6 lead, forcing a Wolverines timeout. Michigan took the next two points, but the Eagles took the set 25-14 and the match in three sets.
The Wolverines will conclude the Boston College Invitational on Saturday (Aug. 26) at 1 p.m. when they face off against Sacred Heart at Margot Connell Recreation Center.
