The University of Michigan rowing program collected the eighth Big Ten Championship in team history on its way to a successful run at the NCAA Championships in the 2023 spring season.
Below are season highlights from the 2022-23 season.
Regular Season
• Winter, spring training: U-M took trips to Florida (December) and Tennessee (February) to focus on training and bringing the team's varsity athletes up to full speed before the regular season. Of course, those trips come with plenty of time to bond and grow closer as a rowing family.
• Big Ten Invitational brings country's best: Racing at Nathan Benderson Park in Florida, host to several recent NCAA Championships, U-M lined up with nine ranked teams over the two-day regatta. All eight Big Ten programs participated, and five additional conferences were represented. The Wolverines were one of six top-15 programs on the water and showed well against teams like No. 2 Stanford and No. 6 Brown.
• Senior Day sweep: The Maize and Blue swept its Senior Day regatta against Louisville, winning the 1V8, 2V8, 1V4 and 2V4 races with second-place finishes from the 1N8 and 3V4 boats. The Wolverines and Cardinals have made a tradition out of meeting on the last weekend of the regular season, and U-M enjoyed success across the board this season.
Postseason
• Big Drama in Indianapolis: With gold medal efforts from the 1V4 and 2N8 boats and silvers from the 2V8 and 1N8, the Wolverines trailed Ohio State by 10 points heading into the final event of the Big Ten Championships, the 1V8. Michigan needed to beat the Buckeyes by two places to earn the team title and did just that, winning gold in 6:21.292 with OSU settling for bronze.
• Team Outperforms Seeding at NCAA's: The Wolverines eclipsed their NCAA seeding in all three boats: the first varsity eight (ninth, seeded 10th), second varsity eight (12th, seeded 13th) and first varsity four (ninth, seeded 11th).
