DEXTER, Mich. -- The No. 25-ranked University of Michigan women's cross country team got its season underway by hosting the Michigan Open at Hudson Mills Metropark on Friday afternoon (Sept. 1).
The Wolverines raced against Detroit-Mercy and finished with a sweep of the top five positions.
For the second straight season, Kayla Windemuller won the Michigan Open, clocking a time of 17:21 with Samantha Saenz finishing just behind with a mark of 17:21.6. Both runners stayed together from start to finish to secure the top two spots in the season opener. Rounding out the top three was newcomer Lani Bloom, who logged a time of 17:52.0 in her Michigan debut.
The next finisher for the Maize and Blue was Samantha Hastie, who registered a mark of 18:07.9. The final runner in the top five was Rylee Tolson, posting a time of 18:11.4.
All Wolverines competing in uniform or unattached finished with a time under 21 minutes.
Michigan will return to action on Sept. 9 when it makes the trip to Madison, Wis., to run in the Badger Open.
