ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The No. 8-ranked University of Michigan field hockey team scored twice off its penalty-corner attack en route to a 2-0 win against No. 10 Saint Joseph's on Sunday (Sept. 10) in front of 518 fans at Phyllis Ocker Field. The win completed a perfect home weekend for the Wolverines, who extended their win streak to four consecutive games, including three straight shutouts.
Senior Pilar Oliveros and freshman Kelsey Reviello converted on direct corner strikes in the first and third quarters, respectively -- the second goal on the weekend for both Wolverines.
Oliveros scored U-M's first and game-winning goal at 9:22 on the Wolverines first corner of the game, deflecting the direct shot off the SJU flyer's stick and high into the goal. Junior/sophomore Claire Taylor and senior Lora Clarke earned assists for the stop and insert, respectively.
Reviello used a similar goal to pad the Wolverines' lead at 37:16 in the third quarter, rocketing a corner strike off a defender's stick and redirecting it into the cage. Taylor added a second assist with the stop, while senior Kate McLaughlin earned one on the insert.
Michigan (4-2) played shorthanded for a significant portion of the game, which featured 12 total cards and nine on the Wolverines, including three yellow cards in the fourth quarter. SJU (4-2) pulled its goalkeeper with 12 minutes remaining and, with a three-player advantage for nearly three minutes, earned some sustained pressure deep inside U-M territory.
The Wolverines weathered three Saint Joseph's penalty corners before getting back to full strength and chewing up the final five minutes of clock time on the right sideline.
Michigan outshot the Hawks 12-6 and outcornered them 8-4. Junior/sophomore goalkeeper Caylie McMahon posted three saves to secure her second complete-game shutout on the season -- and U-M's third in a row -- while SJU goalkeeper Janelle Ward stopped five of seven Michigan shots on goal.
The Wolverines will open Big Ten Conference play on the road next Friday (Sept. 15) when they travel to Columbus, Ohio, to face rival Ohio State at 4 p.m. at Buckeye Varsity Field. Michigan wraps the weekend with a noon game at Kent State next Sunday (Sept. 17) at Murphy-Mellis Field in Kent, Ohio.
