TOLEDO, Ohio -- Senior Monet Chun (67, -5), fifth-year senior Hailey Borja (69, -3) and graduate student Emilie Paltrinieri (72, E) combined to help the University of Michigan women's golf team post a final-round best 283 (-5) to tally an 881 54-hole total Tuesday (Sept. 26) and earn fifth place at the Glass City Invitational at the prestigious Inverness Club.
In one of the fall's strongest fields, the Wolverines had a slow start Monday (Sept. 25) morning posting a 308 total in the misty and rainy conditions. Heading back out for the second 18, U-M was improving, but the 10-team field was called off the course at 7:15 p.m. due to darkness and weather.
Returning Tuesday morning, three 72s (E) from Borja, redshirt-freshman Mara Janess and freshman Sidney Yermish helped the Maize and Blue drop 18 shots from the first round and etch a 290 on the leaderboard to position the Wolverines fifth at 598. Using that momentum, U-M came out firing in the final round using 16 birdies during the first half of the round to inch closer to the top three.
Maintaining a steady pace, U-M used a 67 (-5) from Chun and a 69 (-3) from Borja to post the lowest team total in the final 18 (283, -5) to maintain the fifth position after producing an 881 event total. In the tightly contested battle, just three shots separated places three through five.
After back-to-back 74s (+2), Chun used her season-low 67 (-5) to close with her ninth career sub-par 54-hole total to finish sixth (215, -1). After an uncharacteristic start with an 80 -- just the fifth in 122 career rounds -- Borja rallied to a top-15 finish after her 72 (E) and season-low-tying 69 (-3) gave her a 221 total and tie for 15th.
Yermish was able to capitalize on their second round 72 (E) to capture their first top 20 finish, tying for 18th with a 224 (77-72-75) total. Janess' 227 (30th) and Paltrinieri's 228 (t-31st) rounded out the Wolverines starting five. Playing as an individual, freshman Grace Wang tied for 26th (226).
Returning to Ann Arbor for a few weeks of prep, U-M will head back to Chapel Hill, N.C., to play in the Ruth's Chris Invitational, Oct. 9-10, at the Governor's Club. Making its seventh consecutive trip to UNC's home event, the Wolverines tied for fifth last season after an 883 total and Anika Dy's tie for eighth (216, E).
