RICHMOND, Ind -- University of Michigan men's golf senior Jude Kim and freshman Jason Gordon played as individuals at the Indy at Forest Hills today (Friday, Sept. 29) and finished 1-2 in the individual standings after 36-hole tallies of 139 (-1) and 140 (E), respectively, at Forest Hills Country Club.
Kim and Gordon's medalist and runner-up finishes continue U-M's successful fall season as the Wolverines have won two team titles in three events and now have back-to-back events with individual wins after Ben Hoagland and Yuqi Liu were part of tri-medalists at the Virtues Intercollegiate (Sept. 25-26).
In an opportunity to play as individuals, Kim and Gordon paced the Maize and Blue effort at the 49-golfer event which included 13 teams from the Indianapolis area including -- Ball State, Bowling Green, Butler, Chicago, Cincinnati, Eastern Kentucky, IU East, Kentucky, Miami (Ohio), Miami Middletown, Ohio, Purdue Fort Wayne and Purdue.
After bogeying two of his first four holes, Kim quickly found himself two-over. However, he caught fire as back-to-back birdies (Nos 5 and 6) drew him even. Playing five-under over his final 14 holes, including three more of his five first-round birdies on the back-nine, he tied his career low with a 67 (-5), putting him atop the leaderboard. With four more birdies in the second round, he produced a closing 72 (+2) to tally the event's lone sub-par 36-hole total at 139 (-1) and better teammate Gordon by a single shot.
In his third fall event as an individual, Gordon opened with a 72 (+2) as two birdies erased half of his four bogeys on the opening 18. Collecting three more birdies, as well as 14 pars, he followed posting a career-low 68 (-2) -- his second career sub-par round of his young career -- to draw even at 140 and earn runner-up honors.
The Wolverines will return to action when they head to Little Rock, Ark., for the Little Rock Invitational, Monday and Tuesday, Oct. 16-17. The two-day, 54-hole event will be played at the Chenal Country Club.
