HOUSTON, Texas -- The National Football Foundation and College Football Hall of Fame announced on Monday (Jan. 8) that University of Michigan four-time All-Big Ten first team offensive guard Steve Hutchinson has been selected to the 2024 College Football Hall of Fame Class. Hutchinson was a member of three Big Ten championship teams for the Wolverines as well as a starter on the 1997 national championship team.
Hutchinson becomes the 40th Wolverine to receive the recognition and will become the program's 11th offensive line enshrined in the College Football Hall of Fame.
One of the greatest players to wear the Maize and Blue, Hutchinson compiled an impressive 41-8 overall record and a 27-5 mark in Big Ten games during his career. He started four bowl games and helped Michigan to victories in each of those games: 1998 Rose Bowl, 1999 Citrus Bowl, 2000 Orange Bowl and 2001 Citrus Bowl. He started 46 overall games at guard and is the second player in school history and the third in Big Ten history to earn All-Big Ten first-team honors all four seasons.
Elected team captain as a senior and fifth-year senior, Hutchinson did not allow a sack during his final two seasons in the winged helmet. He was a two-time first-team All-American (1999, 2000), was the 2000 Big Ten Offensive Lineman of the Year and a finalist for the 2000 Rotary Lombardi Award.
After graduating from Michigan, Hutchinson was selected in the first round of the 2001 NFL Draft by the Seattle Seahawks (17th overall pick). He played 12 years with three franchises -- Seattle Seahawks (2001-05), Minnesota Vikings (2006-11) and Tennessee Titans (2012) -- and was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2021. He was a seven-time All-Pro and Pro Bowl selection (2003-09) and was named one of the 50 Greatest Minnesota Vikings. Hutchinson started 169 games during his career and was named to the NFL's All-Decade Team for the 2000s and twice earned the NFL Alumni Offensive Lineman of the Year award (2006, 2009).
The announcement was made during ESPN's "Championship Drive" Show prior to the National Championship Game. Hutchinson will be honored during the third quarter of the match-up between Michigan and Washington.
The official induction ceremony will take place at the 66th National Football Foundation Annual Awards Dinner, held on Tuesday, Dec. 10, 2024, at the Bellagio Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas.
