ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The No. 5-ranked University of Michigan field hockey team shook off a slow start then exploded in the second half to earn a 4-0 win over Rutgers on Friday afternoon (Oct. 11) in front of 405 fans at Phyllis Ocker Field. It was the Wolverines' ninth straight win and their fifth shutout in six games.
Michigan (9-1, 3-0 Big Ten) broke the scoreless tie late in the second quarter, at 25:42, on freshman Cami Wiseman's second goal in as many games. Senior Alana Richardson rifled the ball into the circle from the right corner, graduate student Lora Clarke got her stick on front and deflected it slightly toward the left post, where Wiseman knocked it in behind the Scarlet Knights goalkeeper. She owns three total goals on the season.
Senior/junior Abby Tamer used an incredible solo effort to double the Wolverine lead at 37:33, early in the third quarter. Tamer intercepted an errant Rutgers pass near midfield, carried the ball around a defender into the circle and fired a shot from the top of the circle. The ball hit the goalkeeper's stick and deflected into the cage. With her ninth goal of the season, Tamer tied her career high and earned a share of the Wolverines' season lead in the category.
The Wolverines converted on a pair of attack penalty corners in the opening three minutes of the fourth quarter to pull away. Sophomores Esmée de Willigen and Juliette Manzur scored on the posts in a near-mirror image of each other. De Willigen tipped in a goal from the right just 23 seconds into the frame, getting her stick on freshman Eva Bernardy's shot and redirecting it behind the RU goalie for her second this season. Manzur scored her third of the season from the left post at the 47:17 mark; after inserting to Tamer on the left side of the circle, she tipped the initial shot high into the top-left corner of the cage.
Michigan outshot the Scarlet Knights 16-5, including 12-2 in the second half, and outcornered them 6-2. Sophomore/freshman goalkeeper Hala Silverstein earned two saves for her second straight complete-game shutout in Big Ten action, while Rutgers' Sophia Howard stopped five of nine U-M shots on goal.
The Wolverines will wrap up their nonconference schedule against Ball State at 1 p.m. on Sunday (Oct. 13) at Ocker Field. The game will be streamed live on B1G+, while admission is free to all regular-season home games.
