EUGENE, Ore. -- The University of Michigan women's soccer team snapped a four-game losing streak, earning a 1-1 draw against Oregon on Sunday afternoon at Pape Field.
Michigan (2-11-2, 1-6-1 Big Ten) recovered from an early 1-0 deficit to pick up its second draw of the season. Oregon totaled 18 shots, putting eight on goal compared to 17 shots and seven on goal for the Wolverines. U-M goalkeeper Stephanie Sparkowski was stellar, recording six saves on the afternoon.
Oregon struck first, taking a 1-0 lead in the 25th minute when a header off a cross from the left side sneaked past Sparkowski.
Michigan tied the contest in the 41st minute, opting for a short corner kick. Sierra Sargent played it to Kali Burrell, who immediately returned it to Sargent on the left side. Sargent served the ball in, and it curled into the back of the net for her first career goal.
Michigan weathered Oregon's first-half attack, as the Ducks put up 11 shots with five on goal. Sparkowski made four saves, while Michigan managed four shots in the first half.
The Ducks threatened early in the second half, but Sparkowski and Avery Kalitta combined to stop the shot, a decision that held up after replay review.
With just over 20 minutes remaining, Michigan had a flurry of chances, sending the ball into the box, but the Oregon defense held firm. Jenna Lang fired a left-footed shot after Oregon initially cleared the ball, but it was right at the keeper, keeping the score at 1-1.
Elle Ervin had a breakaway down the right side in the final 10 minutes, but her shot was just wide left.
Sparkowski punched the ball over the goal in the 83rd minute, denying Oregon's best remaining chance. Michigan had one last opportunity, with Lang firing a shot on goal in the final 40 seconds, but it was right at the keeper, sealing the 1-1 draw.
Michigan returns home for two straight games at U-M Soccer Stadium, first hosting Northwestern on Thursday, Oct. 17, at 7 p.m.
