IOWA CITY, Iowa -- A strong night all-around led the University of Michigan volleyball team to a three-set win over Iowa (25-16, 25-20, 25-18) on Friday night (Oct. 25) at Xtream Arena.
Michigan (16-4, 6-3 Big Ten) was led offensively by Allison Jacobs, who tallied 15 kills, and Valentina Vaulet, who had 10. Ella Demetrician added eight kills with just one error, while Jacque Boney went errorless on 12 swings, recording five kills. Boney led the Wolverines with six blocks, contributing to a team total of 10. Maddi Cuchran had a team-leading 15 digs, while Morgan Burke dished out 25 assists. U-M also tallied 10 aces, with three each from Cuchran and Demetrician, and two from Burke and Mira Chopra.
The Wolverines opened the first set on a 2-0 run, but Iowa (9-12, 3-6 Big Ten) responded with a 4-0 run to take a 5-3 lead. Michigan tied the set at five with an ace from Burke, but the Hawkeyes reclaimed a two-point lead at 7-5. U-M answered with four consecutive points, featuring a kill from Demetrician and three Iowa errors. Iowa tied it again at nine, but U-M went on a 3-0 run and held the lead for the rest of the set. Vaulet scored a kill before an ace from Chopra, and Boney and Demetrician contributed a block assist. Seven unanswered points gave U-M a 20-11 lead, with four different Wolverines recording kills in the stretch, along with an ace from Demetrician. Iowa won four of the next six points, but U-M took two of the final three, with a kill from Vaulet clinching a 25-16 first set win.
Iowa claimed the first point of the second set, but a kill from Demetrician tied it at one. Boney's kill put U-M in the lead for good. Iowa narrowed the gap to two multiple times, most recently at 16-14, but a 3-0 Michigan run with kills from Boney and Jacobs, plus a block by Serena Nyambio and Burke, helped secure the lead. The teams traded the final 12 points of the set, but U-M reached the six points it needed, with Jacobs sealing the 25-20 second set win with a kill.
Michigan controlled the third set, opening with an ace from Demetrician. Iowa tied it at one, but U-M went on a 5-0 run, including two kills from Jacobs and an ace from Cuchran. Iowa closed the gap to 8-6, but Michigan responded with three straight points, with two kills from Vaulet and an ace from Chopra. Neither team managed consecutive points until Michigan secured the final three points of the match. A kill from Vaulet put U-M up 23-18, and an ace from Burke brought the Wolverines to set point. A Hawkeye attack error gave Michigan the 25-18 set and a 3-0 match victory.
