BOSTON, Mass. -- Five straight third-period goals propelled the 11th-ranked University of Michigan ice hockey team past fifth-ranked Boston University 5-1 to win a brand-name battle on Friday night (Nov. 1) inside Agganis Arena.
Graduate student Logan Stein started in net for the first game of the back-to-back, continuing an early-season trend for the Wolverines. The seasoned goaltender made 22 saves on 23 shots faced to improve his record with Michigan to 3-1.
The Wolverines went 0-for-2 on the power play in the first period while holding a 9-2 advantage in shots after the first 20 minutes. Michigan won 12 of 20 faceoffs, and out-attempted BU by a 25-7 count. However, the game was scoreless after one period.
The first big chance of the second period came over two minutes in when Stein made a save to turn aside a dangerous shot off a 3-on-1 odd-man rush after defenseman Tim Lovell did his job to erase both passing options.
Michigan took its first penalty of the night at 2:48 of the middle period when Jackson Hallum was tagged for tripping. On the ensuing advantage, BU's first of the evening, a Terrier forward slipped behind the U-M defense to receive a breakout pass for a breakaway and BU converted to take a 1-0 lead at 3:31.
Stein made a big save in transition to deny a dangerous chance for the Terriers before Jacob Truscott was penalized for cross-checking in the waning seconds of the middle frame.
Starting the third period short-handed, U-M dismissed the remainder of BU's advantage to return to full strength.
Michigan evened the score at 4:47 when Josh Eernisse created the chance by working at the half wall to corral the puck before spinning and firing a pass onto the tape of Evan Werner on the other side of the zone in the right circle. Werner quickly lasered a shot to the top shelf to tie the game at 1-1.
Just 96 seconds later, Werner potted his second goal as a Wolverine to help Michigan surge ahead 2-1 at 6:23. U-M continued to ride the wave of momentum as it broke out down the ice in transition. Michael Hage soared down the left flank with the puck to draw the goaltender's attention before dishing the puck over for Werner to bury from the right side.
Away from the play at 9:58, a BU forward was called for slashing to hand the Wolverines a third power play. The third time was the charm for the power-play unit, as senior alternate captain Ethan Edwards intercepted a clearing attempt before proceeding to walk the blue line with the puck before firing a strong shot from the blue line that found twine to make it 3-1 at 10:27.
While the game went to a media timeout, the officials headed into the penalty box to investigate a possible major penalty. After reviewing the play, a BU defender was assessed a five-minute major penalty for elbowing and a game misconduct to further tilt the ice.
Two minutes into the lengthy major power play, the Terriers deepened their conundrum by getting a stick up into the face of a Wolverine to make it a 5-on-3 advantage.
Truscott added a fourth goal with 4:08 remaining to make it 4-1 Michigan with three seconds remaining on the two-minute minor penalty. Schifsky and William Whitelaw collected assists on Truscott's first tally of the season.
Just after BU emptied its net in favor of an extra attacker, Nick Moldenhauer won a race for a puck in the neutral zone before flinging a long-range shot into the open cage with 1:46 left in the contest. Werner finished off his strong game by assisting on Moldenhauer's marker.
In addition to winning by a four-goal margin, Michigan ended the night with a 35-23 advantage in shots on goal and a 33-28 edge in faceoffs.
On Saturday night (Nov. 2), Michigan will return to Agganis Arena to finish up the series against the Terriers. Puck drop is set for 7 p.m., and the game will be streamed live on ESPN+.
