CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. -- The No. 8-ranked University of Michigan wrestling team completed its road weekend sweep of Atlantic Coast Conference foes with a 29-12 rout of Virginia Sunday night (Nov. 24) at the Cavaliers' Memorial Gym. The Wolverines claimed seven individual bouts for the second straight dual and earned bonus points in all but one.
With the dual starting at 157 pounds, Michigan won each of the opening five bouts and, again for the second time this weekend, scored bonus wins in the first three.
Graduate student Chase Saldate, ranked 12th in the latest InterMat poll, set the tone with a 13-3 major decision over Michael Gioffre in the opening bout. He seized a comfortable early lead after scrambling for a takedown, adding three near-fall points and riding out the first period. He tacked on a reversal in the second and, after fighting off a UVA single-leg shot, turned and finished on a double midway through the third to secure his bonus point.
Freshman Brock Mantanona claimed the biggest win of the dual when he knocked off 12th-ranked Nick Hamilton -- Virginia's highest-ranked wrestler -- with an 11-3 major decision at 165 pounds. He scored takedowns early and late in the first period, scrambled out of a deep UVA single shot to score on the edge in the second, and rode for 1:11 advantage time. It was his second bonus win over a ranked opponent in as many dual-meet appearances.
Fifth-year seniors Joseph Walker and Jaden Bullock rallied from initial deficits -- both first-period Cavalier takedowns -- to win at 174 and 184 pounds, respectively. Walker, ranked 27th nationally, cruised to a 17-5 major decision over Rocco Contino with a second-period reversal, three separate turns for seven total back points, and a pair of takedowns, including a late double leg on the edge in the third period. Bullock, ranked 18th, scored two takedowns to beat Griffin Gammell, 9-4, with a treetop single in the first and a double leg in the second, and rode for 1:22.
Graduate student Jacob Cardenas, ranked third nationally at 197 pounds, produced his third straight technical fall in as many matches for Michigan with an 18-1 win over Ethan Weatherspoon. He scored two takedowns in the first, settling back into a headlock for four back points on the latter, and ended the bout with a takedown and a four-point tilt at the 3:58 mark of the second period.
Graduate student Dylan Ragusin also earned his third bonus win in as many matches this season with an 11-1 major decision over Gable Porter at 133 pounds. Ragusin, ranked fourth nationally, scored a takedown per period, finishing on a drag midway through the first period and ankle picks in the second and third -- and rode out each frame to accumulate 2:38 in advantage time.
Sophomore Sergio Lemley, ranked eighth at 141 pounds, scored 16 unanswered points in the third period to beat Kyren Butler, 16-1, after riding time. Trailing 1-0 after Butler's late second-period escape, Lemley earned caution and escape points early in the third before putting Butler in neutral danger out of a scramble for a takedown and four back points. He added two more turns off a tilt and another scramble for seven combined points and rode out the match for the tech with 2:42 in advantage time.
The Wolverines (3-0) will take a week off for Thanksgiving before returning to action at the annual Cliff Keen Las Vegas Invitational next Friday and Saturday, Dec. 6-7, in Las Vegas, Nev. Action starts at 9 a.m. PST and will be streamed live on FloWrestling.
