MADISON, Wisc. -- Will Cooksey and Alex Cairo of the University of Michigan men's tennis team captured the Big Ten doubles title on Sunday (Nov. 10) at the Big Ten Individual Championships in Madison, Wisc.
The pair won all four matches including a 7-5 decision in the title tilt against Ohio State's Brandon Carpico and Nikira Filin. Earlier in the tournament they topped two pairs from Indiana by matching 6-1 scores and a duo from Wisconsin 6-4.
It marks the program's first B1G doubles championship since 2018 when Davis Crocker and Harrison Brown won -- and is the 27th overall.
Cooksey led the Wolverines in singles play as well, reaching the semifinals this afternoon but falling to Aleksa Krivokapic (Purdue) 6-3, 6-7 (6), 10-6. On Friday posted a straight set win over Wisconsin's Oliver Ollson and defeated Indiana's Deacon Thomas in a 10-point tiebreaker 6-2, 1-6, 12-10. Cooksey had to defeat teammate Mert Oral in order to advance, winning 6-1, 7-5 in the quarterfinals.
Oral won three matches before he faced Cooksey. He recorded wins over Vincent Yang (Northwestern) 6-1, 6-1, Tomas Zlatohlavek (Wisconsin) 6-2, 6-2 and Roni Hietaranta (Nebraska) 3-6, 6-3, 10-4.
