ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- University of Michigan men's soccer head coach Chaka Daley announced Wednesday (Feb. 7) the hiring of Sean Hughes as an associate head coach for the 2024 season.
"We are excited to welcome Coach Hughes and his family to Ann Arbor," said Daley. "Coach Hughes brings tremendous global and domestic relationships along with great experiences in coaching and recruiting from all levels and we can't wait to get him integrated with our program and our academic and athletic culture. His professionalism, insight and relationship building will bring a new perspective that our staff and student-athletes will embrace immediately as we look to compete for championships."
"I am grateful to Coach Daley for giving me and my family the opportunity to be a part of his staff," said Hughes. "I'm excited to join one of the most prestigious academic institutions in the country and I am looking forward to working with the current group of players. The challenge of the Big Ten is something that I cannot wait to get started with."
Hughes comes to Michigan after an eight-year stint as a coach at Marquette, where he served as the associate head coach starting in 2020 and was the team's recruiting coordinator. During his time at Marquette, Hughes helped the team to three Big East Tournament appearances, an NCAA Tournament Sweet 16 in 2020-21 and a Big East Midwest Championship in 2021.
At Marquette, he helped coach three student-athletes to MLS SuperDraft picks, two Big East Freshmen of the Year awards, the Big East Goalkeeper of the Year and had 13 players named to the All-Big East team. He also was an integral part of Lukas Sunesson's MAC Hermann Trophy semifinalist bid.
Prior to his time at Marquette, Hughes was the head coach at Maryville University in 2015, where he set the single-season record for wins at the Division II level and his team had the most shutouts in program history. Under his tutelage, Hughes helped the team earn the program's first-ever postseason award, the Great Lakes Valley Conference Freshman of the Year.
Prior to Maryville, Hughes served as an assistant coach at Quincy University where he helped the program to a 49-9-8 record with two GLVC championships and an NCAA semifinal appearance, while finishing as the No. 3-ranked team nationally in 2014. During his time at Quincy, Hughes coached four All-Americans, two GLVC Freshmen of the Year, two GLVC Defensive Players of the Year, one GLVC Offensive Player of the Year, the GLVC Men's Soccer Scholar-Athlete of the Year and more than 20 all-conference selections.
Hughes earned his Bachelor of Arts degree in sports management from Cardinal Stritch in 2010 and his MBA from Quincy in 2014. Hughes earned his USSF A License in 2020. He will be joined in Ann Arbor by his wife, Danielle, and two children, George and Grace.
